100 miles around Seattle in the books!! Another Ride for Refugee Resiliency alongside @worldreliefseattle & @bccgreenlake complete, this time adjusted for Covid, but the community coming together to create a welcoming environment for our newest neighbors was the same. Grateful to be a part of this one!

Yesterday, June 20th, was World Refugee Day and the first time that the number of displaced people worldwide due to conflict, persecution, natural disasters, and the effects of climate change eclipsed any other time in history. We can all do something. For me, it starts with creating hospitable communities to welcome the stranger. And it just so happens this can be done, even in part, by riding your bicycle. Thank you for the support!

Team Dallas Highlight!! "Our team had the opportunity to go to a prayer service run by a guy named Kyler and an apartment complex. Kyler had been serving the people there for over a year and had lead the prayer service there for a while on Monday nights. There were only about five other people who attended the service that night we did. I wondered why he continued to commit to running this prayer service if so few people showed up. It seemed like an inefficient use of his time and energy. After the service we got to pray with him, and something he said answered all of my previous doubts. If nothing came of all his ministry there, he said it would still be worth it because of Jesus. In talking with others that attended the prayer service, they expressed that choosing a life of walking with Christ was better than anything the world could give, even if their decision was never validated through worldly means. I was challenged to serve the Lord not for personal gain but his Glory, regardless of the outcome." - Neilson Pettingell (TL) #MissionsAndOutreach

One crucial way to stand with us today is by speaking up to your elected officials. Congress has the power to act and often make key decisions that affect vulnerable people around the world and in the United States. When you speak up and contact your elected officials, they are more likely to understand and support positions that would help the immigrants and refugees we serve at World Relief Durham. Take action today using @worldrelief sign-on letters to your representatives at the link in our bio.

There’s something so special about welcoming someone at baggage claim after hours of them traveling. I never get tired of photographing these arrivals for refugee families, and still get emotional thinking about their journey and stories they’ve brought with them to America. This family has tried to get to the US three times but was denied access up until now. It was an honor to document them finally being united again. I’m thankful for organizations such as @arriveministries that work to resettle individuals coming to the US and the ways they provide resources upon arrival. May we strive to be people who choose welcome and compassion above all. ⠀

Today is World Refugee Day and these courageous riders are pedaling 100 miles to raise support for welcoming the stranger in the PNW!
•
I have been privileged to be a part of the annual @worldreliefseattle SEA-TRI-KAN ride for refugee resiliency across WA state since it began. This year, we pivoted due to Covid-19 and are doing a socially distant single day century around the city. We’ve nearly reached our goal of $100,000 for refugees in WA state and these folks are braving the rain along the way!
•
Each year since coming on staff at @bccgreenlake we have had a team of riders join the effort. This year was no different as we continue to demonstrate our passion for the church to be a place of hospitality to all nationalities, statuses, and ethnoracial identities.
•
I am better for every refugee and immigrant family I’ve been blessed to know and am grateful this day to show just a little support for continuing to welcome these folks and allowing them the opportunity to better our communities more and more.

“When we work together as churches, we can accomplish much more than when we are alone." - Charles

Charles is a church leader in World Relief’s Church Empowerment Zone in Rwanda. Join us as we partner with @worldrelief to build unity among Rwandan churches. We are matching $100,000 for a total grant of $200,000 to teach Rwandan churches how to work together to change their communities.

The Rwandan genocide in 1994 pitted the Hutu and Tutsi tribes against one another and resulted in the deaths of more than one million people in three blood-soaked months. Rather than being places of refuge and sanctuary during the violence, many churches were sites of massacres. Some church leaders even participated in the genocide as a way of eliminating challenges to their authority. This legacy of church involvement in the genocide has left lasting scars.

We are partnering with @WorldRelief to heal the lingering effects of the Rwandan Genocide. Through intensive trainings churches learn to see one another as collaborators rather than competitors. Churches then put this new found knowledge into practice by working together to identify and respond to their community’s unique challenges and needs through community service projects.

These projects include rebuilding homes for widows, starting savings groups to foster economic stability, paying school fees for orphans so they can pursue an education, and more community empowerment work.
As churches work together on service projects, trust grows.

The NO BAN ACT is up for a vote March 12,on THURSDAY.
This would rescind The Muslim and asylum bands and help prevent future unjust bands from happening again. We must pass this bill to ensure that no president can discriminate against those with every right to enter the country based on religion, race, or nationality. On Saturday, January 11, our housing counselor Jo Albert and volunteer Dave Johnson presented Gateway to Homeownership at the Chicago Zomi Community Chruch in Wheaton. Orchestrated by volunteers from Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Naperville and Pastor Lian Sian Mung, eleven congregants participated in the workshop. Larry Althoff and Lee Thomsen through their association with Our Saviour’s and World Relief, work closely with immigrants and asylees. Pastor Mung acted as interpreter and the church provided childcare. These families are now anxious to continue working on budgeting, savings and homeownership counseling with H.O.M.E. DuPage. We are excited about the continued pursuit of their dreams of homeownership. Moreover, we thank Larry, Lee, Pastor Mung, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church for the opportunity to collaborate with this community.
