I’m proud of every Coffee shop event we’ve done so far but this one hits particularly close to home. Having grown up in Midvale I’ve seen Main Street go through many changes (for the better more recently) while still maintaining that old towne spirit, like that of your favorite Halloween themed Disney Channel movie.
It’s with great privilege to feature two world class Hip Hop selectors/turntable wizards in the latest Breakfast Blend DJ series. Given that this one hits so close to home I want to take the opportunity to reach out to some of My Hillcrest High school people for an unofficial reunion of sorts. The stakes couldn’t be any lower.. just come grab a coffee and chill out for a little bit. The more Huskies that come out, the more fun and interesting this is going to be, so if there’s anyone from school you can think of please reach out to them. ✌️

This is my friend @gabrielamadeus— one of the kindest, most generous, hard-working humans you’ll ever meet. I’m so thankful for him, our friendship, his passionate dedication to all things trails, & for bringing me along on my first ever bikepacking trip. Gabe brought together this delightful group for an overnight on the Klickitat Sisters trail to celebrate the launch of @orogenesiscollective Colemonti Crossing Loowit Tier — 200 miles of singletrack-focused bikepacking from Packwood to White Salmon.

@orogenesiscollective creates & stewards the longest mountain bike route in the world —5,000 miles from the Canadian border to the southern tip of Baja. This route exists thanks to the visionary, creative & stewardship efforts of Gabe!

@kurt.refsnider & Brandon both pedaled south from British Columbia at the beginning of August, crossed paths, & quickly developed a friendship. Brandon is bound for Oregon & Kurt for Baja with a goal of being the first to complete the Orogenesis route (which he will surely accomplish). We had the absolute pleasure of hosting these beautiful humans at our home as they passed through Packwood making their way south through my absolute favorite place, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

I’m thankful for lasting & new friendships, a heathy dose of trail time, some much needed precipitation, perfectly ripe huckleberries, & fields of wild flowers. Also, I’m a bikepacker now ✌🏼

Orogenesis days 13-15, Packwood + Loowit Tier celebration: Crossing over the divide to the deep, dark, wet forests on the west side of the Cascades and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest brings the route to the little former logging town of Packwood and the northern end of the Loowit Tier of Orogenesis. A rainy rest day with some bike maintenance (fresh brake pads and a bleed!) on Friday was followed by the sun peeking out as a crew gathered for an overnighter up on the Klickitat #7 Trail. The Orogenesis Collective crew, volunteers, and Trans Cascadia have worked together over the past few summers to log out and reopen this long ridgeline trail. And it sure is a fun one!

Back in town, we gathered for an evening celebration of the recently-released Loowit Tier, the southernmost 200 miles of the route through Washington. Now Brandon and I are headed off on that, with a bit of an exploratory diversion along the way to reconcile an alternative for southbound riders.

A huge thanks to @sarahfrances169 and @remyphotofun for their generosity, conversations, trail work, and so much more here in Packwood and the GPNF.

Made some great decisions.

Made some terrible decisions.

It all worked out different than planned, but it all worked out better than expected.

I also got to meet @worldsbetweenlines in real life at Placerville. What are the chances that two bikepackers who only know each other through insta, end up riding into the same small town on the same day, especially when one is from Washington! Nice to meet you Patrick (and your friend Sam). Patrick was impressed with the all the packed bikes leaning against the brick wall… that’s how we roll here. It’s frequent fare for IWBP and I also love it! 💙

Thanks to @connie_m_s_h for another great year. I loved the new singletrack section added up at Bogus. I didn’t love only 2 hours of sleep, but everyone was pushing such a fast pace this year!

My main goal was to finish, but my secondary goal was to get at least as far as I did last year, which was to get up and over Dry Buck Summit (120 miles) on day one, which I was able to do! 🎉 I made it even further to Horseshoe Bend by 2:30am. (Sorry to the house I woke up having a snack in the park in the middle of the night).

I’m not sure if I went out like this or it happened during the race, but my derailleur cable was frayed to where it only had a few threads still holding on. 😬 Rookie mistake for not checking cables on an older bike I chose to ride before going out. From that point on, I was trying not to use my gears unless totally necessary, so my knees took a serious beating!! I was shifting so delicately, but grinding my guts out a lot of the time!! The cables held and I didn’t have to convert to single speed!

Thanks to everyone for all the support and words of encouragement that kept me going!
