POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Meet Katie Mauro, a 2026 Explorers Club Teacher Fellow, who is heading to the island of Menorca to join the @menorcashipwreckproject & Flag #69 in the field.

Led by Trevor Wallace (@worldwidewallace ) the Menorca Shipwreck Project investigates centuries of maritime history beneath the ancient harbor of Ciutadella, documenting wrecks that tell the story of trade, conflict, and connection across the Mediterranean.

Through the MSP field school, Katie will train alongside archaeologists, divers, and nautical architecture specialists, learning underwater survey, photogrammetry, and site documentation techniques. A library media specialist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Katie weaves ecoliteracy and technology into her lessons and loves connecting her students with experts in the field. This season, she will bring the Mediterranean seafloor back to her library.

The Teacher Fellowship sends educators into the field with Explorers Club expeditions so they can share the process of discovery firsthand with the next generation of explorers.

Stay tuned for more updates as Katie dives into history this season.

I make hats for archaeologists sometimes. Ain't no thing. 😏🧭🌿

@ginocaspari looks over the team as they delicately remove and wrap a piece of ancient hewn timber which once made up the structure of the kurgan. These ancient burial mounds possess immense quantities of tiny information about a nomadic and quite sophisticated people that relatively little is known. It was my pleasure to join Gino and @worldwidewallace to this site and help record the team working through excruciatingly difficult conditions for @frozencorpsesgoldentreasures

"Real hardships strike us once the snow arrives, and icy winds blow through the camp. The work is not finished yet, and we have to continue to excavate in freezing mud and cold temperatures."

Riding is a great way to move on the steppes. The Scythians were the first horse back archers 2,000 years before Ghengis Khan, and innovated on some of the earliest horseback riding technologies in history.

/ Archaeology isn’t only about fighting with circumstances in the trench or finding cool structures and artefacts. No discovery here is made without help of science, so it’s time to say few words about the science behind Tunnug. Today - about physical anthropology (or bioarchaeology).
This is the most direct way to meet ancient people. We haven’t yet discovered the burials of the first Scythians, but south of the kurgan we fully excavated a burial ground of the Kokel culture (people who lived here in the first centuries CE). 85 skeletons discovered were scrupulously studied by our anthropology team. The most common thing you determine by studying bones is sex and age, but you can tell a lot more - what kinds of activity the person was used to (like riding a horse, or using an axe), what stress she/he experienced during lifetime, was his food ok or not (judging by dental health), what injuries did the person suffer and sometimes what was the cause of death. All these facts are «stored» in bones and a professional anthropologist can get this information from the skeleton in the burial.

#fbf To three years ago and being part of a great group after being awarded a spot on the Adventure Canada Young Explorers Program through The Explorers Club. I will never forget exploring the remote and wild sandbar Sable Island off the coast of Nova Scotia. Around 500 horses reside on the isle and a very dedicated citizen scientist, Zoe Lucas, is also based there for much of her time. I will also never forget travelling with George Shomo, pictured here standing second from left, as he had never left NYC before this trip at the age of 53. He was a caretaker at The Explorers Club and directors grouped together to send him on his first holiday outside of the U.S. He had never flown before and he told me he ‘gripped the armrests with both hands’ as he took off. This was a trip that will stay with me forever. Thank you Adventure Canada for the opportunity.

"An excellently preserved burial with an iron cup uncovered in 2019. Many of the skeletons we found died a violent death and we could trace decapitations, slice and chop marks in a high percentage of the population." Working in Hanapepe I get to see this amazing mural all the time. Spread across the Habitat for Humanity building @kekanakolu @808urban brings you on a visual journey across space, time, history and culture. From traditional cultivation methods, to voyaging, the amakua gods of the natural world this piece is so rich and varied. These photos really only capture parts of this expansive work.

As someone who works mostly in a very small scale I can only imagine how long this would take. I loved learning a bit about the process where community members added their handprints across the whole wall. It’s awesome when public art can bring people in to be a part of it.
