Winter, 2024. I flew north to Kugluktuk with a small crew, musicians, recording engineers, more gear than sense, to chase a song.

The story we came for: the discovery of an ancient Inuit artifact on the Arctic coast, and the wave of emotion that rippled through the community when it surfaced. This song ‘Land of 1,000 Drums’ about @susieqihuulik experience finding a beautiful kudliq in Kogluktualuk (Tree River) showed signs of life thriving where others saw a barren, empty landscape. This inspired a songwriting workshop for youth the following year.

@artscancircle made it possible they shipped 150kg of reconditioned guitars, keyboards, and gear north so we could spend a week running songwriting workshops with the students at Kugluktuk High School. The song that was created was about the pure joy of spring snowmobiling. I was lucky enough to get to ride along with Ken Taptuna and film the youth in action on their skidoos, experiencing -55 with windchill, the coldest I have ever been, but totally exhilarated. Thank you to @adventurecanada and The Hawthorn Foundation for supporting the project.

The film premiered where it belonged, in Kugluktuk, January 2026, alongside a live concert and a second round of workshops for the next wave of young songwriters and musicians. Full film is live now digitally at signsoflife.ju.mp

Hula, as many know, is much more than a dance. It is living culture, it is language preservation, it is community in movement. Our team getting a chance to film @kirstiepiikea and @aulicious_ performing ʻIke I Ke One Kani Aʻo Nohili’
in the area the hula was composed for is hard to put into words; the power, reverence and significance. @fotopopkauai captured this moment as the sun set over Ni’ihau lighting up the cliffs of Polihale golden, Pi’i and Auli’i silhouetted against the waves. Historic places must be preserved but also life breathed into them by those connected to it.

While the film Polihale: Place of our Hearts includes many interviews and oral histories, the sequence with the hula shows beyond words. This Friday we are excited to share the film with the Kaua’i community Friday August 28th at @the_historic_waimea_theater 4-6pm with Q&A. Please RSVP via my link in bio or at Polihale.org #PIC #polihale #kauai #kauaiiswhy taken in Polihale State Park by @worldwidewallace

Working on ‘Polihale: Place of Our Hearts’ has reminded me of something I keep relearning on every project: the sum of the parts is always greater than the whole.
This film wouldn’t exist without the crew who showed up for it, day after day, in every way that mattered:
Kona: gentle knowledge, rock-solid dependability, and a positivity that never wavered, even on the hard days.
Jeff & Nicollette: juggling a hundred things at once, and somehow doing every single one of them with energy and laughter.
Makana : a guy with a huge heart and even more talent, who made everything he touched better.
Piʻi : on camera one minute, coordinating cleanups the next, always willing to jump in and support wherever needed. She had my back the whole way through, and that means everything.

This is just the film crew. There are so many more people who poured themselves into this story in front of the camera, and I can’t wait to properly thank and acknowledge every single one of them when we share more.

Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.

After years in the works we are finally doing a community screening of Polihale: Place of Our Hearts, August 28th from 4-600 at the Waimea Theatre on the West Side of Kauaʻi. We will start with pūpūs and talk story then the film at 5 followed by a Q&A. It is free but please sign up for the RSVP for us to get an estimate for food.

It was such an honor for me to create this film while living on Kauaʻi with an amazing team and community. The focus was to show the importance and sacredness of a place with so many layers of living history just beneath the surface. Many places around the world are known for their beauty but their stories are lost to time. But the stories, and the people matter.

Big thanks to the entire @picpacific team that helped me make this a reality as well as funding from @harvardtravellersclub club that helped get it off the ground.

‘Sometimes we forget to let nature talk to us, we are so busy talking to the nature. But allowing nature to talk to us, it has a lot to teach us.’

Interviewing elder Susie Evyagotailak @susieqihuulik for our project Inuuhiqaqtut Naunaitkutait / Signs of Life sitting in her warm home in Kugluktuk, Nunavut on a cold February day, something she said has stayed with me ever since. It’s rare, but every so often someone’s words settle into you. From the way they were said to the truth they conveyed, it is a moment I will never forget. I’m grateful I was able to record it.

This short is a collaboration with @raffjam , supported by @artscancircle, @adventure.canada , and the Hawthorne Foundation exploring how song connects to culture, life, and place. It premiered in Kugluktuk this past January alongside a live concert and a second round of workshops for local youth.

The digital premiere is September 1st www.signsoflife.ju.mp

The Corpse Squad 9 years apart. Thanks to the excellent talents of @felixkunze we have a time capsule of @ginocaspari and my interludes at @the_explorers_club Annual Dinner, this year an appropriate theme of ‘Oddesseys’- bringing together fellow field scientists, exotes, friends, rivals, expeditioners from around the world. Dr. Caspari won his vest of course in the legendary sheep squatting competition in Tuva (I got a bottle of deer blood for my 2nd place performance), his whip and fox hat in travels around the steppe. I had a nice matching one that unfortunately got eaten by bugs. This year I decided to commemorate my Irish passport with the National Tartan.

Grateful to have this friend and comrade throughout the years cutting our own path, though our adventures have left us somewhat scathed. The classic refrain ‘It’s not the years, it’s the mileage’ definitely applies. But every mile with you my friend has been more than worth it.

But gala dinners aside, we embark on another chapter of our Oddessey this week, a secret shipwreck mission we hope to share soon… wish us luck!

Warning: Human Remains

Super cool mission today: dropping off @ginocaspari camera to @kolarivision for an infrared conversion, so he can keep using this technology to uncover mysteries of ancient mummies around the world.
Earlier this year, Gino and his co-authors — archaeologist Aaron Deter-Wolf (@archaeologyink ), tattoo artist D. Riday (@totemic_tattoo ), S. Pankova and M. Vavulin, published a paper in @antiquityjournal on the tattoos of Scythian ice mummies from the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia, dating back over 2,300 years.
These are extraordinary tattoos, mythical beasts locked in combat, deer, big cats, fantastical composite animals rendered in classic Scythian animal style. If you haven’t seen them, look them up.
Using near-infrared photography and photogrammetry, the team revealed details invisible to the naked eye, including evidence of what kinds of tools were used and how the tattooing was actually done. Working with @totemic_tattoo who specializes in ancestral tattooing techniques, they compared the ancient marks against experimental tattoos made using hand poking, subdermal, and incision methods.
So today I am the delivery guy. Go check out @ginocaspari work and the full paper in Antiquity.

Teaching as exploration. Hear me out.
*small Hail Mary spoilers if you haven’t seen the trailer*

Exploration gets measured in feats, records, and endpoints- but it’s not the physical achievement alone. It’s the knowledge you bring back. As a young classroom teacher I learned quickly that learning is never a one way street. My students taught me as much as I taught them.
From journeys of the mind come the seeds that reach the mountaintops and back.
When explorers share what they discover they teach us, about ourselves, other species, the earth, cultures and histories around the world. How we can solve big problems and understand our world better. In my time with on expedition, in the field school @menorcashipwreckproject , or working with leadership or on the Explorers Club Teacher Fellows Program, it is the pursuit of knowledge in community that has driven me.
Hail Mary is a bit of escapism - but there are real astronauts heading to the moon with Artemis II. I believe a future astronaut is sitting in a classroom right now who could inspire the world to be a better place- and a teacher to inspire them. More to come.

It was a remarkable experience to visit the island, learn about it's history and meet those who endeavour to uncover it's deeper mysteries hidden underwater.
#35mmfilm

But the best description goes to @worldwidewallace ✍️

" Looking for lost shipwrecks is a romance with the bottom of the sea that lures obsessive vagabonds from the far edges of the map.

We sweat, we squint, we argue with the
ocean, and somehow Haddaway is asking Baby Don't Hurt Me' like the sea hasn't been doing exactly that for centuries.

Thanks to Riccardo for making us look sexy while we were mostly just salty and feral.
In a photo filled world, I like the honesty of analog, the in-between moments, unpracticed poses, and the beautiful mess of actually being there."
