FRI., 10/23, 7 p.m.
THE TASTE OF TEA
Japan | 2004 | DCP | 143 min. | Japanese with English subtitles
Director: Katsuhito Ishii
Cast: Takahiro Sato, Maya Sakano, Tadanobu Asano
In the quiet Japanese countryside, a series of surreal and comic episodes explore a wildly unconventional family: an artist mother obsessed with animation, a hypnotherapist father, a lovestruck teenage son, a daughter haunted by a double, and an uncle troubled by ghosts of the past. Director Katsuhito Ishii, who contributed the anime sequence to Kill Bill, crafts an eccentric portrait of domestic life that blends deadpan humor, musical interludes, animated flourishes, and dreamlike imagery. Both playful and deeply odd, The Taste of Tea is “the most charming comedy in town,” (Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune).

SUN., 10/18, 2 p.m.
Zeitgeist Shorts
16mm/35mm| 100 min.
Far more than most distributors, Zeitgeist Films goes to bat for visionary cinema that do not fit into the traditional two-hour theatrical runtime. Their eclectic collection includes the short film catalog of stop-motion masters Jan Švankmajer and The Brothers Quay, as well as the mind-bending early work of Peter Greenaway. Zeitgeist also celebrated new voices, including the fascinating shorts produced by Apparatus, a nonprofit founded by Todd Haynes and Christine Vachon to support emerging filmmakers. The program includes Food (Švankmajer, 1992, 17 min.), He Was Once (Mary Hestand, 1989, 16 min.), Street of Crocodiles (Quay, 1986, 21 min.), We’re Talking Vulva (Tracy Traeger & Shawna Dempsey, 1990, 5 min.), and A Walk Through H (Greenaway, 1978, 41 min.). PUNK KLEZMER, RASPUTIN & A HORSE NAMED TUESDAY!

“Our theory is if you combined enough, if you rip enough people off — you create something your very own.” — Bucky Wanko

Only Bucky could explain Fugu Dugu's musical philosophy quite like that!

Ahead of our October 22 show at KlezFest Midwest, Bucky joined Dan Grabois of Tsuzamen for a hilarious interview with Jeff Spitzer-Resnick on WORT 89.9 FM Madison.

Siberian prisons, Baba Yaga, Rasputin's 17th reincarnation, violin death certificates and a hallucinating horse — somehow, they even found time to talk about music!

READ THE INTERVIEW & LISTEN ON WORT!

And catch both bands LIVE:

FRI., 10/16, 8 p.m.
THE WILD PARTY
USA | 1929 | DCP | 77 min.
Director: Dorothy Arzner
Cast: Clara Bow, Fredric March, Jack Oakie
The prototypical flapper Bow crackles with rebellious energy as Stella Ames, the ringleader of a clique of hard-partying college women whose carefree antics collide with the strict rules of campus life. When Stella falls for a handsome young professor played by UW-Madison legend and Racine native Fredric March, the story shifts from wild comedy to a romantically-charged thrill ride. The first talkie for Bow, Paramount Pictures, and pioneering director Arzner, The Wild Party captures the daring spirit of the pre-Code era with sharp humor and complex characters. A new 4K restoration will be screened! Preceded by Betty Boop’s first appearance in Dizzy Dishes (1930, 7 min.).

FRI., 10/16, 6 p.m.
LETTY LYNTON
USA | 1932 | DCP | 84 min.
Director: Clarence Brown
Cast: Joan Crawford, Robert Montgomery, Nils Asther
This terrific MGM pre-code melodrama was inspired by the notorious 19th-century Madeleine Smith murder trial. Crawford stars as the title character, a glamorous socialite fleeing a destructive affair in South America and seeking a fresh start with a wealthy suitor (Montgomery). When her former lover (Asther) attempts to blackmail her, Letty is driven to desperate measures. A major critical and box-office success in 1932, the film became equally famous for the lavish gowns designed by Adrian, including Crawford’s iconic white organdy dress that sparked a nationwide fashion craze. Despite its acclaim, copyright litigation forced Letty Lynton out of circulation in 1936, leaving it largely unseen for more than 90 years until its long-awaited 4K DCP restoration and return to the big screen this year!

THURS., 10/15, 7 p.m.
FJORD
Romania, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark | 2026 | DCP | 146 min. | Romanian, Norwegian, English, Swedish with English subtitles
Director: Cristian Mungiu
Cast: Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve
Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a devout couple who move their family from Romania to Norway. Their belief system puts them at odds with their new, overwhelmingly secular community. The latest from 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days director Cristian Mungiu is a characteristically knotty inquiry into the double standards of liberal tolerance.

Tonight on @wortfm Radio Literature, Romeo and Juliet’s Dylan Juni (Romeo) and Wyatt Clement (Friar) in-studio at 7:30 PM, 89.9 FM locally or streaming worldwide.

Wyatt (shown here from May’s production of Measure For Measure) “enjoy[s] playing characters who are their own worst enemy,” including the pictured Angelo, Guildenstern (R&G Are Dead), Judge Turpin (Sweeney Todd), and John Worthing (Earnest). Naturally, he aspires to play both Coriolanus and King Arthur down the road.

“As the Friar, I’m looking forward to sharing some of the few moments of true optimism in the play, such as his first soliloquy, and the relationship between him and Romeo. I’m also looking forward to sharing the ending, which is one of the most iconic in Western literature,” he says. “A couple reasons: the language truly sings and only reveals more the more you hear it. I also think it’s themes are so fundamental to the human experience that they never grow old.”

Wyatt finds his opposite-side co-conspirator just as compelling. “Juliet’s Nurse’s life has been filled with tragedy, having lost both her husband and daughter before the start of the play, and yet she has found true joy in her relationship with Juliet. Despite her tendency to talk at length about herself, her actions make here one of the most selfless characters in the play. She helps to arrange Juliet’s marriage with Romeo because she sees that’s what Juliet truly wants, even if it goes against the Capulets’ wishes. It’s interesting, then, that she later encourages Juliet to marry Paris, thereby losing her charge’s trust, and ends the play having lost arguably more than any other surviving character.”

Catch our preview on-air tonight and make your plans to see Romeo and Juliet, coming soon to @bartell_theatre_madison
