"Ain’t No Saving Me, Ain’t No Saving Me, Or You." - "Superman That"

This album is special. Truly. I first listened to this album with no experience on July 14, 2025 and went in blind. That very day was the day this album saved my life when I went through some horrible times around March that I was still dealing with. By The Time I Get To Phoenix is the final album of Injury Reserve following the tragic death of Stepa J Groggs, the heart of the group. Nathaniel RiTchie and Parker Corey created an experimental Frankenstein in the rap genre that isn’t just emotional, but haunting, dark, unforgiving, and so brutal that it’s enough to melt any brains. But me? I loved it. Yes I’m saying it right now. This is an album that truly managed to impress me for its production, lyrics, vulnerability, and just how perfectly well made it was and how they tribute Groggs in his memory. And on this day, celebrates 5 years of one of the greatest experimental rap albums in 2021 (Hot Take: Better than JPEGMAFIA’s LP, love Peggy though.) and it truly makes me happy seeing this album turn 5, because it’s truly one of the greatest achievements the group has ever made, and one to close Injury Reserve before turning into By Storm. This album has all my flowers forever, Happy 5th to Phoenix, Forever. 🔴☀️

5 years ago, @injuryreserve self-released their second and final studio album, By the Time I Get to Phoenix.

Injury Reserve, consisting of rappers Ritchie with a T, Stepa J. Groggs, and producer Parker Corey, released their self-titled debut album in 2019 and gained acclaim previously off of mixtapes and EP’s prior such as Live from the Dentist Office, Floss, and Drive It Like It’s Stolen.

Tragically, during the creation of By the Time I Get to Phoenix, member Stepa J. Groggs, passed away at the age of 32 on June, 29, 2020.

By the Time I Get to Phoenix is built around grief, dread, and despair influenced by the death of Groggs, the death of Ritchie with a T’s stepfather, as well as the overall hellish year that was 2020.

Hearing this album 5 years later, I still can’t wrap my head around the otherworldly production and emotional writing that is interweaved into this project.

“Knees”, “Superman That”, and “Top Picks For You,” are standout songs I would like to mention, but the whole album is incredible and is such an emotional experience of an album that I couldn’t recommend more.

REST IN PEACE STEPA J. GROGGS

By Storm FKA @injuryreserve interview:

Normally, I’d avoid going to Richmond under most circumstances. But for Ritchie and Parker of By Storm, I gladly made an exception.

This is a musical group I’ve followed for nearly a decade after I first heard ttkv. And through that time they have reshaped their sound, image, and even name. It wasn’t until 2019 when I saw them live for the first time on their self titled album, Injury Reserve, tour. Where myself and three friends got battered in a strobe lit, sweat dripping, smoke filled @neckofthewoodsnz

And now, as By Storm, Ritchie and Parker have come through the other side of loss with hope and triumph told through their album My Ghosts Go Ghost.

After a chicken parma and a little bit of AFL at the Cricketers Arms we headed back to the green room to talk about ‘Experimental Rap’, prioritising art over analytics, grapefruits and moving forward.

Thank you Ritchie and Parker.
