This is my performance from Vivid Art Fest on September 19.

With the world we live in nowadays, it was important to me to do a song about what it can be like to grow up transgender. There has been a lot of progress in how the world treats 2SLGBTQ+ people, but there is still so far to go. It is 2026 and there are still places in the world where it is illegal to be transgender, 13 countries to be exact. It is 2026 and there are still 66 countries where it is illegal to be gay. It is 2026 and there are countries where it is legal, but are still trying to take away our basic human rights, or at the very least, heavily restrict and control the rights we do have.

Transgender people (including nonbinary and other gender diverse individuals) make up approximately 3% of the world’s population. Yet queer youth are 4x more likely to attempt suicide than our cis-het counterparts. Our trans youth are nearly 6x more likely to attempt suicide. 2SLGBTQ+ adults are more than twice as likely to have mental health conditions. Transgender individuals are nearly 4x that risk.

Just one supportive person in that queer person’s life could make all of the difference. One supportive person could be the difference between life and death. I’m not saying this to be dramatic, I’m saying it because it’s true and it should be said. These people, the kids especially, are the future of the world and we are losing so many bright souls due to hatred and intolerance.

I know this because I am a part of those statistics. This is a song that I wish I had when I was growing up. The message in it is one that I wish someone had told me when I was growing up. So this performance and song is for my younger self and for anyone else who needs to hear its message.

There is NOTHING wrong with you. We live in a world that doesn’t understand us. That’s not our fault. It’s everyone else’s for not taking the time to see that we are just people who want to be loved and accept for who we TRULY are.
