✨COVER REVEAL!✨

When it was released five years ago, Neema @avashia's ANOTHER APPALACHIA received many accolades:

Lambda Literary Award Finalist, Lesbian Memoir/Biography
Named the BEST LGBTQ+ MEMOIR of 2022 by Book Riot
Named a New York Public Library Best Book of 2022
Weatherford Award finalist, nonfiction
and more

Now it's back in a special 5th Anniversary Edition, out from @wvupress February 16, 2027, which includes a new conversation between Neema and Robert Gipe. Its new cover was designed by Than Saffel, who describes his approach to the new cover: “I was WVU Press’s art director at the time the first edition of Another Appalachia was released. A big part of me appreciated the distinctive look of the first edition’s cover, and some part of me disliked it, in the same way members of your own family can drive you crazy. So I tried to create a version that recalls the original, but brightens it up a little bit. I was delighted by Neema's enthusiastic reception, especially, of the quilt pattern behind the title. Neema’s mother was an avid quilter, so it gave me a great deal of pleasure to honor her in that way.”

Be sure to pre-order your copy of this new edition of ANOTHER APPALACHIA wherever books are sold.

✨COVER REVEAL!✨

Check out the cover of BLACK SPACE: APPALACHIAN REUNION, CELEBRATION, AND HOMECOMING edited by William Isom II, out from @wvupress on March 16th, 2027! The book includes photographs by Holly Rainey, Jessica Tezak, and Jabari Guthrie.

When asked about her approach to the design, Elisha Zepeda said, “The goal was to let these photos speak for themselves. To enhance the subject matter at a glance when paired with the title.”

Be sure to pre-order wherever books are sold, and follow @black_in_appalachia for more updates! a graphic featuring the cover of Black Space. It features a black and white photo of children playing in water being sprayed over their heads.

On our podcast Chirpin’ Time with Davis Shoulders, @stianrice discusses the violence of the American food system. It’s not a broken system. It’s functioning exactly how it’s supposed to. You can listen to the full interview over on the longform app. 📺

Happy Pub Day to @stianrice's new book ELSEWHERE, which is out from @wvupress! Check out those blurbs. 😎

ELSEWHERE argues that you can make all of the “smart” food choices you want and follow Michael Pollan to the letter, but that won’t end the violence in the food system. ELSEWHERE invites us to ask different questions about the food system: where does its violence come from, where does it go, and how can we nurture a food system that first does no harm. Grab your copy wherever books are sold!

“A.I. has many useful applications, and there are moving, innovative ways that poets and writers incorporate it into their work to explore questions of grief, the robotic, and the limits of language. But when this kind of innovation isn’t the aim in our writing and the fear of failure motivates AI’s use, we risk losing something immense. We risk losing the creativity that a mistake can lead us to.”

@meghana_mysore's essay "The Human Pleasure of Mistakes" appeared in the @pghreviewofbooks! Head to pghrev.com to read the full essay. ✨ The Human Pleasure of Mistakes
“With our sharp turn towards the robotic, we are slowly abandoning the human. We are losing the pleasure of making mistakes and the ability to hear the poetry that thrums through even the most ordinary of days.”
