TALES OF THE SMITHS: A GRAPHIC BIOGRAPHY By @ConChrisoulis is essential reading for FANS OF Morrissey, Johnny Marr and the legendary Manchester pop group.

This is a huge book in four-panel bursts of (well done) cartooning that focuses largely on Morrissey (and Marr) and the dour mood in and around the Manchester punk and pop scene that led to the group’s formation.

At first I wasn’t sure what to think but by taking the reader on a journey through the subjects’ lives, loves, hopes and dreams— Chrisoulis really gets under the hood of this important band, what makes them tick and why coming together was so critical. This isn’t another riff on musicians’ sex lives, bad behavior and drug intake. There’s a sure thread about how loneliness and longing bring the most— or least likely people together at the right zeitgeist moment. I learned a lot I had a sense of but didn’t know and the rest will have to be left up to my imagination.

For nee fans of the Mancunian masters— this is the place to start while listening to the singles and studio albums. One can only hope @ConChrisoulis has the energy to follow it up with the legendary story of the band’s four-year run through the breakup and notorious court case.
