POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

dear ♌️, especially the femmes:

ty for inviting me to be the main character of my life 🧑🏻‍🩰

for leading by example by centering yourself, your needs and opinions while rejecting the cultural scripts we’ve been bamboozled into following 💅🏼

for teaching me that being the center of attention does not, per se, make you conceited and even if it did-would that be such a bad thing? 💁🏻‍♀️

I love y’all for embodying a taboo confidence that is becoming less so because of women/femmes like you who make no apology for wanting and pursuing everything they want 🫶🏼

may you keep blazing your own path and looking radiant in the process 💋

Scenes from SYMPHONY OF FERMENTATION, an edible installation by the MS Advanced Architectural Design program students including, Nicole Kertznus, Hyeseong Kim, Sungjik Kim, and Meng-Syun Sung, in collaboration with Miguel Gallego (MFA 2026).

During fermentation, microorganisms grow, shift in size, and form colonies, constructing hidden architectures within food. As they multiply, they generate subtle vibrations and frequencies that overlap and resonate, producing a continuous field of acoustic activity. Symphony of Fermentation brings these processes into perception. Through a series of transscalar installations, microbial activity is translated into a layered sonic environment where recorded and live inputs intersect. Simple mechanical listening devices, inspired by automata, amplify and mediate these signals, allowing visitors to engage with biological processes that are otherwise imperceptible.

Leonid Slonimskiy & Artem Kitaev (KOSMOS) will deliver the lecture“Never Permanent” in AAD Arguments on June 17th, 2026.

KOSMOS is an architectural practice with offices in Zürich, Graz, and virtually across borders. Their work encompasses urban, architectural, and object design, as well as research and art installation. Through experimentation with materials and construction techniques, KOSMOS explores the spatial and visual parameters of architecture to define its contemporary meaning and to consider the architect as a curator of spaces and materials in time. KOSMOS explores the relationship between architecture and temporality: the ways buildings and their elements can be continuously adapted and reinterpreted to meet evolving needs.

Their design work and research have been published and exhibited widely, including the Venice Architecture Biennale, Triennale di Milano, Sao Paulo Biennale, and the Swiss Architecture Museum. Their accolades include the Prix de Geneve for Experimental Architecture, Pro Helvetia Prize, and nomination for the Swiss Art and Design Awards.

Introduction and response by Xiaoxi Chen, Barry Wark, & AAD students.

The Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design MSAAD Arguments lecture series returns this summer with eight contributions engaging architecture through extraction economies, material assemblies, post-crisis urbanism, infrastructural and housing projects, and cinematic futures. Each guest shares a critical text in advance, using the lecture as a site for collective discussion and debate.

The Arguments lecture series is organized by MSAAD Director Lydia Kallipoliti @lydiakallipoliti and Associate Director Xiaoxi Chen @xiaoxi_projecting @gsapp_aad

Scenes from GSAPP’s inaugural Architecture Review Summit.

Students and instructors from Advanced Studios VI in conversation with Lucia Allais, David Benjamin, Håvard Breivik-Khan, Johnny Chiu, Christopher Gardner, James Heard, Kian Hosseinnia, Stella Ioannidou, Ziad Jamaleddine, Ateya Khorakiwala, Reinhold Martin, James Nanasca, Amelyn Ng, Phuongminh Nguyen, Alessandro Orsini, Lasse Rau, Lidia Ratoi, Lindy Roy, Mahdi Sabbagh, Regina Teng, Dimitra Tsachrelia Holl, Anthony Vanky, Adam Vosburgh, Michael Wang, Mark Wigley, among others.

The half-day laboratory of exchange served as the culminating moment of the reviews, bringing all projects into a shared setting where students presented their work, compared approaches, and situated the studios’ investigations in dialogue with critics across studios and disciplines from GSAPP and beyond.

The Review summit is organized by the Directors and Associate Directors of M.Arch and AAD programs: Lydia Kallipoliti @lydiakallipoliti, Marc Tsurumaki @ltlarchitects, Xiaoxi Chen @xiaoxi_projecting, and Darwin Eng @applefied_darwin.

AAD Edible Summit: Symphony of Fermentation
Wednesday, April 1st
6:30pm in Avery 100

What if microorganisms were already composing—quietly shaping space through sound?

During fermentation, microorganisms grow, shift in size, and form colonies, constructing hidden architectures within food. As they multiply, they generate subtle vibrations and frequencies that overlap and resonate, producing a continuous field of acoustic activity. What is typically understood through taste can also be sensed as rhythm, intensity, and tonal variation. Shaped by climate, crops, water, and cultural practice, each fermentation carries distinct environmental signatures that extend beyond flavor into sound.

Installation and presentation by AAD Students Nicole Kertznus, Hyeseong Kim, Sungjik Kim, and Meng-Syun Sung in collaboration with sound artist Miguel Gallego (Columbia Computer Music Center).

The AAD Edible Summits is an initiative by the MS Advanced Architectural Design program.

Tuesday, March 31, at 6:30 pm, architects Xiaoxi Chen, Lily Chishan Wong, and André Santos convene a gathering to present their work-in-progress multimedia project, Ta-Chim: Weighing a City’s Colonial Legacies. It traces the shifting political, material, and sensorial relationships between urban artifacts in Lisbon and Macao in search of postcolonial futures. “Ta-chim” translates to “balances” in Patuá, a critically endangered creole language developed in Macao, which was a Portuguese colony until 1999. The ongoing project was first exhibited at the 2025 Lisbon Architecture Triennale to ask: how does a city’s colonial legacies weigh against the seafaring rituals of homelands? Ta-Chim assembles archival images, films, performing bodies, and 3D scans to map circulations of post-colonial and diasporic matters and bodies.
