A question came up yesterday on @seriously.shelbs’s Q&A about whether to get an MS or MPH in biostatistics. This is a common question for the epidemiology and biostatistics domains of public health so I thought I’d put together a simple post explaining the difference. Mee-A chose to get her MPH over an MS because she was less interested in academic research and more interested in practicing epidemiology in the field. Sitara chose an MPH over the MS because she wanted practical training and public health application before embarking on an academic degree. Of course, your degree is what you make of it so there is no one size fits all or one pathway to success. Choose your degree based on what works for you! Amber Gabrielle(@ohshewentglobal) discusses how she discovered her passion for public health and her goal to strengthen healthcare systems for better surveillance and treatment. Amber attended George Mason University where she studied global affairs with an emphasis on global health.

. "I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia! My mom is a gifted interior designer who has had her own business for decades, and my dad is a logistician with an extensive Army background, so I was sort of a military brat. At 18, I went to the DC area to attend college at George Mason University. I thought I wanted to be a foreign diplomat, but absolutely loathed the coursework for global affairs. Always being interested in diseases and conditions that affect the human body, I switched to global health, and felt a peace and passion I’d never had about my coursework before. I completed two short international service trips for public health in Latin America, and then attended The George Washington University to get a graduate degree in epidemiology. Basically, I changed careers before even starting my career, and it wasn’t easy at all, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
As an epidemiologist, I study the causes, distribution, and control of diseases among populations. Currently, I’m conducting HIV surveillance in the city of Baltimore. We have A LOT to do to reduce new HIV diagnoses in the city, the US, and the rest of the world. My ultimate goal is to work around the globe and help strengthen systems for better surveillance and treatment for childhood cancer and other conditions. I’m keeping my options open regarding what to do next, but I do know that a terminal degree in either epidemiology or medicine is in the future.
Aside from my career, I’ve also built a profitable blog that focuses on wellness aspects that are often overlooked. I inspire young professionals and side hustlers to maintain wellness and balance with productivity tips, book recommendations, recipes, hair/beauty advice, and travel tips. In addition to the blog, I run a book consultation business, The Lit Lady, where I create personalized reading lists for individuals and companies..”
