My child,

I don’t know when this letter will reach your hands,
next week,
or the week after.

I’m writing as I make a big pot of thịt kho, your favourite dish.
I made it and sat down to eat,
but it didn’t taste as good on my own.

Now that you’re coming back,
whatever you feel like eating,
mum will make it for you.

Even from far away,
knowing that you are happy is enough.

My child,
I’m waiting for you to come home.
