Object One: Meet me at 6 o’candle.

Before clocks became digital, candles once measured time through their diminishing height.

This object reinterprets that ritual through six stages of light and disappearance. Instead of measuring time numerically, it reveals time atmospherically; through warmth, shadow and presence.

As the candle slowly descends within the alcove, the object shifts from illumination to ember, transforming time from something counted into something felt.

Inspired by Rumi’s idea that form can both veil and unveil meaning (something I learnt while reading The @theheartofdesign by @petergouldart ) the piece uses physical structure to reveal an invisible experience: the quiet passing of time.

The accompanying bowl serves as both a holder for matches and a material archive, gradually collecting ash, wax, scent, and residue through repeated use.

Modern clocks optimize time.
This object asks you to inhabit it.

Did you know that the Materials Library at VCUarts Qatar has a circulating collection of thousands of diverse material samples from around the world, including catalogs and printed literature?

In this video, Yasmeen Suleiman explains why the Materials Library is unlike any library you have been to before.

Visitors are encouraged to physically interact with and browse the curated collection in order to understand and experience the tactile properties of materials.

Open to both the academic community and the public, the Materials Library is a space for creative inquiry, making, and learning through materials.

Don’t forget: We are now accepting applications for students seeking admission for the 2026 academic year.

The priority deadline for applying is November 15, 2025, while the final deadline is January 15, 2026.

+ back in march 2023, i had an initial meeting with @y_ns & @imhamani, where they asked me to help develop a cohesive visual identity for @vcuq.matlib … a few months later, we started shaping the vision of a contemporary & visually distinctive graphical system that reflects the Materials Library role as a unique academic resource @vcuqatar

++ what followed were months of constant meetings: discussing, expanding, eliminating, and reimagining the potential of this system together.

+++ i dearly thank them for their trust, and i’m very grateful to have worked closely with two brilliant minds from this region’s creative community. most importantly, it's very heartwarming to see this flexible system slowly unfolding within their space.

Each country has its own fair share of its traditional music. The idea of the Zaffah comes from the Islamic Sharee’ah to do “اشهار or announcement” to be a legitimate marriage that proclaimed openly, which means a new married couple now is in the house. No matter your status is in that community, people will come together and celebrate you.

ElZaffah is pre-ceremony procession performed by a troupe with traditional music, instruments and dance, uniting families and friends in joyous anticipation. In this project we focused on the team’s heritage from Palestine, Qatar and Egypt.

Our project focused on 1 folkloric song from each country, that is being used till this day in our weddings.

Ya Me3eras from Qatar
Doqo El-Mazaher from Egypt
Ya Zareef Altool from Palestine

Special thanks to the main reason for this great journey, our team:
