Each country has its own fair share of its traditional music. The idea of the Zaffah comes from the Islamic Sharee’ah to do “اشهار or announcement” to be a legitimate marriage that proclaimed openly, which means a new married couple now is in the house. No matter your status is in that community, people will come together and celebrate you.

ElZaffah is pre-ceremony procession performed by a troupe with traditional music, instruments and dance, uniting families and friends in joyous anticipation. In this project we focused on the team’s heritage from Palestine, Qatar and Egypt.

Our project focused on 1 folkloric song from each country, that is being used till this day in our weddings.

Ya Me3eras from Qatar
Doqo El-Mazaher from Egypt
Ya Zareef Altool from Palestine

El Zaffah now on display @londondesignbiennale 🤍🤍 along with many incredible and inspiring @vcuqatar projects by students, faculty and alumni

El Zaffah is a lively pre-ceremony procession performed by a troupe with music and dancing, uniting families and friends in joyous anticipation.

This project dives into the diverse personal histories and cultural traditions seen in wedding ceremonies across Egypt, Qatar, and Palestine, offering a nuanced cross-examination of the Arab region’s rich cultural fabric.

The curated multimedia installation is an invitation to immerse in the rich cultural tapestry of the Arab world. It features audiovisual, 4 channel audio recordings showcasing 3 wedding bands from the three countries, performing 3 traditional songs, as they bring to life the rich traditions of wedding celebrations. The content of the installation celebrates the commonalities and distinctive components of the Zaffah across Egypt, Qatar, and Palestine. It encourages visitors to engage with the personal narratives woven into these cultural practices, revealing the universal human experiences that unite us all.

High resolution tufting, 100% wool, with physical representation of deconstructing all the zaffah songs and the elements of poetry, beats, costumes, patterns,..etc

This project was produced by @vcuqatar Faculty, Alumni and students, by the support of @icr__vcuq taken in Somerset House by @y_ns

In the second episode of The Tasmeem Doha podcast, we examine ephemerality vs permanence. Together with assistant professors at @vcuqatar, @hadeersomar and @y_ns, we think about Tasmeem Doha as a maverick event that has fundamentally transformed the region’s design scene. They describe how university life has been changed by @tasmeem_doha and what they see to be the temporary and permanent day-to-day legacies of the conference. They celebrate the invaluable community, connections and conversations that are born out of Tasmeem Doha in each of its renditions.

In the first 6 episodes of this season, we're looking back over 25 years of VCUarts Qatar and the different chapters of Tasmeem Doha – one of the region’s leading and most influential design initiatives – and chatting with six VCUarts Qatar faculty members and key players who have helped make it what it is today.

Make sure to listen to all of them on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. by @y_ns

"Nothing lasts forever. Even materials that perhaps can withstand many years. Everything has a timeline of sorts."

Tune in to the second episode in the new season of The Tasmeem Doha podcast, today at 6pm Beirut.

Yasmeen Suleiman is Materials Library Curator and assistant professor at @vcuqatar. With her and assistant professor @hadeersomar, we examine ephemerality and permanence in the context of design, the city of Doha, and the @tasmeem_doha conference, as VCUarts Qatar celebrates its 25th year. by @y_ns

It’s taken a week to try to process Tasmeem Doha 2019 - and I’m still not over the elation, and don’t think I will be for a very long time.
It’s been a little over a year of challenges, being out of our comfort zones, putting our all into this passion project. None of which would have been half as enjoyable if it weren’t for my girls @hadeersomar @no.hahahaha @wajihaness
I felt like I was floating on cloud nine day in and day out of the conference. The true measure of the event’s success was hearing how much people enjoyed the experience - our priority from day one!
Our guests - you are a remarkable group of people and it’s been a true honor and pleasure meeting you and getting to know you. Anytime you’re in Doha - you’ve got your Tasmeem family to look after you.
Richard @rjlombard - you held it down for us - and we’re forever grateful for your undying generosity and mentorship. I also have to thank two individuals in particular who have stood by me through and through. Mariam @saddlemaker and Abdul Rahman @ar7mani - thank you for being my rocks and total MVPs. I owe you indefinitely and will forever be indebted to you.
Thank you VCUarts Qatar @vcuqatar for entrusting us with this event and responsibility and for the relentless and incredible support throughout.
this is not the end...inshAllah
