Coco’s Pop(z) Up Run: Ethnic Cancer Awareness Month

The concept of this run came from a desire to raise awareness around the cancers that affect black people and people of colour disproportionately.

This run was to celebrate those who have had cancer and survived, to remember and honour those who had it and didn’t survive, to give hope to those who are still fighting and to give guidance to those who are yet to fight.

All my amazing Team were wearing colours that represent the most prominent cancers and their disproportionalities:

💛: while incidence rates are lower, black individuals may have higher mortality rates for certain sub types of sarcoma.
🩷: black women experience higher mortality rates from breast cancer and are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer and present at much younger ages
💙: black individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage colorectal cancer and have lower survival rates
🤍: Black individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage lung cancer and have poorer survival outcomes
🩵: the rate of diagnosis for prostate cancer is one in eight across all men, but one in four across black men
♥️: black individuals experience higher mortality rates for myeloma in comparison to their white counterparts

There are similar narratives across the spectrum for cancers, including stomach💜and liver💚cancer and leukaemia🧡

While not all my team have had direct interactions with cancer, they have stood firm with me as allies in supporting the cause.

Together, we are louder.

To be clear, this is not about elevating people of colour above others, but rather a plea to be afforded the same level of recognition as our counterparts.

I am incredibly grateful to my team for trusting me to carry this message.

Thank you @pleasedonshoot @donny.trains for capturing these moments x
