We’re delighted to welcome five artists to the next chapter of Acme’s Early Career Awards programme ✨

For more than 24 years, the programme has supported artists at a pivotal stage in their development, providing affordable studio space, financial support, mentoring, and professional opportunities to help build sustainable careers.

This month, the programme begins an exciting new phase with its relocation to Billet Road Studios and the introduction of the Olivia Parson Award. Together, these developments strengthen the support available to artists at an early stage of their professional practice.

Congratulations to our award recipients: Nassim L’Ghoul (@n_lghoul), Yang-En Hume (@yangenhume), zakkiyyah najeebah dumas-o’neal (@zakkiyyah.najeebah), Madara Freidenfelde (@madart_freidenfelde) and Anna Siow Usadi (@annasiowusadi).

Scrumping Apples - is a group exhibition dedicated to artists who have crossed borders, built homes in unfamiliar places, and continue to make work through uncertainty. It is also a reflection on artistic persistence: holding on to the early impulses that first compelled us to create while remaining open to transformation.

For this inaugural online exhibition, we’d like to thank guest-curator Farnaz Gholami, and her thoughtful consideration of all submitted artwork. We’d like to thank all the participating artists for putting their trust into this showcase, and everyone who took time to submit their work. We would like to congratulate Yang-En Hume, the winner of the Artist Spotlight Award, which will be presented on our website and Substack newsletter later this year.

This year’s MFA cohort at The Slade have, between them, put on quite the show. Their Grad Show - currently on view on Gower Street in London - is quite the spectacle with some really exciting art on display, covering a spectrum of disciplines, by some tremendously talented young artists. ⭐️Graduating MFA student Yang-En Hume⭐️
@yangenhume

Yang-En Hume draws from her Australian-Singaporean heritage to weave together personal and collective histories. She holds and attends to stories that have not been traditionally well cared for: Dutch and British spice trades in Southeast Asia, textile craft, and lived experiences of migration and mixed-race identity. After giving birth to her son midway through her MFA, her practice has expanded to consider matrescence and caregiving.
Working across textiles, sculpture and painting, she explores the hybrid spaces that emerge when cultures and identities overlap. Growing up between Australia and Asia has shaped her understanding of home, belonging, and the unsettledness that often accompanies migrant experiences.
