Historically, the U.S. government has been a primary funder of China-related human rights work. Human rights advocate @yaqiu123 talks with Hǎi 海 editor @jinyumi about the problems with U.S. government funding, even before the recent cuts. She argues that China human rights activists should instead seek funding sources less likely to tie donations to other geopolitical agendas.

The U.S. government has long been a primary funder of China-related human rights work. Human rights advocate @yaqiu123 argues that instrumentalizing human rights for geopolitical “great power competition” can undermine the long-term credibility of the work. Yaqiu also argues the U.S. has a “double standard” approach to human rights: its international work is heavily influenced by its foreign policy agenda, and human rights at home are deteriorating.

Recent deep cuts to U.S. support for China human rights work have dealt a serious blow, but they might also provide an opening to explore other, perhaps better, models of funding. In a conversation with Hǎi 海 editor @jinyumi, Yaqiu says China human rights activists should try to source funding from members of the Chinese diaspora, who have the financial resources and political inclinations to support human rights work for its own sake.

As Hong Kong authorities intensify its crackdown on June 4 commemorations around the city and roll out imprisonment for participation in the Tiananmen Massacre vigil, Freedom House’s Research Director for China Yaqui Wang believes people will still remember what happened on June 4, 1989 in Beijing, where students and protesters who demanded democracy and freedoms were met with bloody crackdowns by the Chinese Communist Party, and commemorate what happened 35 years ago today privately.

Repost from @internationaltibetnetwork -
For the first time, Apple has issued a new human rights policy that includes the company’s commitment to freedom of information and expression as human rights. The policy comes after Tibet, Uyghur, Hong Konger, Chinese democracy, and ethical consumer activist groups campaigned about the company’s role in enabling cyber-surveillance and censorship. The landmark decision to approve the policy was taken by Apple’s Board of Directors and published ahead of the deadline to submit shareholder motions for next year’s shareholder meeting.

Mandie McKeown at @internationaltibetnetwork said: “This is a breakthrough moment – Tibet groups have worked tirelessly with our activist partners on this campaign and we are buoyed that Apple have taken this first step towards upholding the rights of Tibetans in Tibet. But this is just a first step and Apple now has to implement this policy in full and we will be watching closely to ensure that it does just that.”
