I am grateful that some media outlets still want to discuss human rights in U.S.-China relations. The moral collapse of the U.S. government should not cause us to lose sight of what matters and what the public should continue to care about. by @yaqiu123

My new piece in @worldpoliticsreview argues that the spread of Chinese AI models is not just about censorship of obviously sensitive topics such as Tiananmen and Xinjiang, but also about the subtler ways these models may shape how we understand the world. by @yaqiu123

In @lawfaremedia I argue Chinese AI companies do not operate as independent actors in the way their American counterparts do, and the absence of visible anti-AI resistance among the Chinese public hardly reflects genuine public consensus. Any U.S.-China AI negotiation that treats Beijing’s stated priorities as representing “China’s” full range of concerns risks reinforcing the very system that suppresses those voices. https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-missing-resistance-in-china-s-ai-debate by @yaqiu123

At Deutsche Welle Global Meida Forum 2026, I said Americans are unhappy with social media companies, and AI companies are already unpopular. Tech executives should take that seriously and cooperate on smart regulation rather than resist it, lest they provoke a major backlash. by @yaqiu123

Trump is in China making deals, focused entirely on trade and technology, without an iota of interest in human rights. But the two are deeply intertwined: much of China's trade advantage is built on human rights abuses. Forced labor -- especially in Xinjiang and prisons across China -- gives Chinese companies an enormous edge. By @countercheckpodcast by @yaqiu123

Historically, the U.S. government has been a primary funder of China-related human rights work. Human rights advocate @yaqiu123 talks with Hǎi 海 editor @jinyumi about the problems with U.S. government funding, even before the recent cuts. She argues that China human rights activists should instead seek funding sources less likely to tie donations to other geopolitical agendas.

The U.S. government has long been a primary funder of China-related human rights work. Human rights advocate @yaqiu123 argues that instrumentalizing human rights for geopolitical “great power competition” can undermine the long-term credibility of the work. Yaqiu also argues the U.S. has a “double standard” approach to human rights: its international work is heavily influenced by its foreign policy agenda, and human rights at home are deteriorating.

Recent deep cuts to U.S. support for China human rights work have dealt a serious blow, but they might also provide an opening to explore other, perhaps better, models of funding. In a conversation with Hǎi 海 editor @jinyumi, Yaqiu says China human rights activists should try to source funding from members of the Chinese diaspora, who have the financial resources and political inclinations to support human rights work for its own sake.
