White supremacy, structural racism and anti-blackness are killing Black people. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted ALL our communities and racism has left no one untouched of it’s evilness. The pandemic has only highlighted the inequalities. The history of Oregon Agriculture omits Black voices, the history of exclusion not only in the state, but from Agricultural resources, higher education and subsidies. Historical trauma and lack of generational wealth has kept GENERATIONS of Black Farmers away from being Owner-Operators. We are quick to share the historical trauma, but not the triumphs! Local community leaders like Vivian Barnett organized over 200 Portland Black families to grow food all over Portland in the 1960s. The GreenFingers project started the community garden movement in Portland. You can ask almost any Black family about their connection to growing food and they could remember a grandparent or family member growing organic produce. What we call regenerative agriculture were oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. Many of us still grow our own food and maintain a connection to our Agricultural legacy. Our grandparents were the original Black to the Land movement builders doing everything they could to find true Black food security and Sovereignty to feed themselves and the community. “The land is, was and has always been, our healing space and our means of liberation and resistance” Words of Dr. Monica White, author of Freedom Farmers. We have responded to our ancestors' call to return to the land! We appreciate all the Shout’s outs and recognition of our work as of late and the financial support. Farming is our lifework. Our Elders have lit the path toward Sovereignty, the blueprint is in our Blood! The days are long, but the harvest is so worth it! We are taking our time to reconnect with family, recharge, organize with other Black leaders, plant, build infrastructure and tend to our crops. Your Contribution supports Black families to have access to food and resources during these times. Support Black Farmers and farm workers in Oregon! We and our Black Farmer comrades are the curators of a new Black Oregon Agriculture legacy!

Hello all! Happy spring and full moon blessings! 🌼🌿🌕 I want to reintroduce myself, as it’s been a while and I have been so honored and humbled by folx taking an interest and following me here on my tiny farm page.

I’m Flynne. My ancestors come from Mexico, Apache territory in what we know as Texas, and Sicily. I didn’t do much gardening growing up, but I saw the meditative joy in both my nana’s eyes anytime we were outside together. They loved plants, flowers and cooking. The magic and intuition of the few folk remedies I remember from them was so intriguing, and it no doubt led me to where I am now.

I am grateful for my dear friend letty @flyingdogheart leading me to @mudbonegrown which is how I am able to farm and grow this tiny business. I tend a small piece of land where I grow medicinal herbs and flowers, and then turn them into a variety of medicine offerings.

I use the mariquita (🐞) as an inspirational symbol of determination and resilience. I believe firmly that all of us should have access to natural ways of healing that allow us to lessen our grip on capitalism when it comes to taking care of ourselves and each other.

I am grateful for all the farmers and herbalists tagged in this post. I have learned so much from all of you and am eager to continue building community with y’all and beyond!

I’m currently working on my spring newsletter and I’ll admit, I’m a little behind. Working and farming during a pandemic has proven to make time feel even more wildly warped than usual. So it goes. If you’d like to be added to the newsletter list, please drop your email in the comments or a dm. I’ll include a plant feature, farm updates, probably some commentary on the pandemic and some info on a Medicinal Bouquet Share I’m launching this year. 🤗

Thanks again to you all and I look forward to meeting folx in person, hosting volunteers, and continuing to shift away from capitalism, white supremacy and the narratives that keep us stuck in a false sense of safety and entitlement. Our culture and society can’t shift unless our brains and hearts do. And that looks messy and takes dedication. If you’re here for that, I’m here for you. ✊🏾💐
