We visited Thomas Waidhofer in his studio and talked about the space behind the work, both physically and mentally.

About having a place that separates work from home. About commissioned projects versus creating something that is entirely your own. About procrastination, expectations, creative freedom, and the strange vulnerability of putting something into the world under your own name.

One thing stayed with us: freedom in creative work can feel incredibly good and incredibly scary at the same time.

Because when the work is truly yours, there’s no company, client or brief to hide behind. You decide what it becomes. And you also have to accept that not everyone will like it.

FESTIVALBAR 2026: The new BITTERBAR is a sweet spot for festival visitors from all over the world, local design, and the regional aperitif culture.

The BITTERBAR on Margaretenplatz is a new aperitif bar that focuses on local networks. Its collaboration with Austrian designers such as Thomas Waidhofer and Klemens Schillinger defines the venue’s spatial identity. This philosophy extends to the selection of the drink menu: The bar breaks away from the established structures of the beverage industry and instead puts Viennese vermouth and products from regional partners front and center. As the official festival bar of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the BITTERBAR thus offers a space where local design and independent beverage culture come together.

„Our space“ is an interdisciplinary creative project that brings together established and emerging artists with young creatives as well as people with learning difficulties and disabilities.

At its core are exchange, collaborative work, and the public presentation of creative processes - over the course of several days, an open creative lab and showroom takes shape, uniting painting, visual art, textile art, music, performance, media art, and live portrait painting. The project creates a platform for young talent and fosters exchange between art, culture, and society, with a focus on access to artistic practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, social and cultural participation.

An accompanying exhibition or art fair makes new artistic positions visible to a broad public. In the long term, our space“ aims to establish itself as an annual „micro creative happening in Vienna, building a sustainable network between art, youth, education, and cultural institutions - a platform that promotes interdisciplinary exchange and strengthens cultural participation.

At the opening and closing, a curated audiovisual supporting program complements the exhibition: DJ sets, live performances, readings, and artistic interventions. Planned contributions include musical performances by Friedrich Liechtenstein with Ken Hayakawa, performance art by Das Bo, as well as, on Saturday, the main musical act by Alexander „Ali“ Schwarz (Tiefschwarz), followed by a Hin & Her DJ set.

During opening hours, Hirooki Hatori will create live aura portraits on request for visitors.

SON OF AN ARCHITECT—For the past five months, we’ve had the pleasure of working in close collaboration with Dr. Clemens Haas on his first independent practice in Vienna. After ten years of training and professional practice in Berlin, Dr. Haas has returned to Austria to establish his own practice, specialising in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, with a particular focus on longevity. The son of an architect, he grew up surrounded by iconic design; a sensibility that became an integral part of the project from the very beginning. Together, we conceived a roughly 150-square-metre practice where medicine, architecture, art and collectible design exist in dialogue. More than a medical practice, the space is an expression of his personal universe—quiet, precise and deeply rooted in a lifelong appreciation for beauty, geometry and aesthetics. Salone is always a good idea—especially when it’s @viennadesignweek’s 20th anniversary. For one night only in Milan, we celebrated Austrian design at BAR LAURA with ADAMGEAORG, Onka Allmayer-Beck, Arthur Arbesser, BCXSY, Marco Dessí, Oswald Haerdtl, Josef Hoffmann, Vera Liskova, Johanna Pichlbauer, Hans Harald Rath, Swedish Girls (Mira Bergh & Josefin Zachrisson), Thomas Waidhofer, Christoph Wimmer-Ruelland, and Anna Zimmermann. Special thanks to @lobmeyr, @sacherhotels, and @apolloniabitzan for helping make this night unforgettable. We were thrilled to welcome so many familiar faces, and delighted to see nearly 200 (!) new and old friends who took the time to stop by and say hello during one of the busiest weeks in a designer’s life. GRAZIE AND SEE YOU NEXT APRIL AGAIN!
