Good day, beautiful people. 😊

Russ (@a.flute.guy) and I (@yeahmanyoga360) had the honor of sharing a ceremonial sound and movement offering to bless the new 2025 addition to Rosa and Craig’s backyard Tulum retreat. For the past four years, we’ve had the privilege of sharing space in their beautiful Little Tulum Escape, @little_tulum_artstudio.

Rosa (@rosa_cline_body_art) is an incredibly talented professional body paint artist, and Craig is a gifted carpenter who built this entire oasis with his own hands. 💪🏾🔨

We embrace Rosa and Craig as family and deeply admire their passion for life and the love they pour into their friends, family, and community. ❤️

We’re already looking forward to gathering again in August 2026 to share another evening of sound, connection, and community with our friends and family.

An overdue artistic reflection. So much to be grateful for. This is one of them.

In 2018, after performing in Water & Power, I made the deliberate choice to step away from acting on stage to focus on producing, prioritizing my family—my wife and our two boys. Now that my boys are older (almost 9 and 11, which I can’t believe!), I felt it was the right time to return. This was their first time seeing their “Dadu” perform, which made the experience even more special.

Acting is my first love and how I started in theater. I became a producer and administrator out of necessity, but stepping back on @urbantheater’s stage felt right. It reminded me of the importance of archiving and preserving our history and culture through the plays we develop and produce. Portraying José “Cha Cha” Jimenez in Chicago Lore(s) by mi hermano Sammy A. Publes was both demanding and deeply fulfilling. I felt a strong responsibility to this role and to the play itself.

Throughout the process, I wrestled with self-doubt.. Playing the title role, I felt the weight, the pressure to deliver, and the vulnerability that comes with being on stage. I leaned into the challenge and found confidence throughout the journey. The amazing ensemble had my back, and I had theirs. Together, we created something that resonated. The play was sold out and highly recommended by critics, warmly received by audiences and supported by the community.

I didn’t learn about the Young Lords or a lot of Puerto Rican history until college. In UTCs early days, I became directly involved in Humboldt Park through the Puerto Rican Cultural Center. Growing up as a Boricua in Little Village, those stories weren’t part of my upbringing, yet they became important to understanding the connection to myself, UrbanTheater and my community. For me, bringing Cha Cha’s story to life was more than acting. He felt familiar — like an uncle, the neighbors, friends, and community members who surrounded me. The experience we presented on our stage was a piece of Puerto Rican history in Chicago.

And that’s a wrap on Chicago Lore(s)! Today marks the closing of an amazing run! A show described by our audience as “inspiring”, “liberating”, “eye-opening”, and so much more!

Thank you to our amazing audience who left us with many sold out shows! And a special shout out to our cast and production team that made the show possible!!

It was truly an honor to share the story of ChaCha Jimenez and the Young Lords! And relive true Chicago history many had never heard about!

I used to dislike closing shows, I used to cry and get very sad but now I celebrate it big. Closing gives me a chance to reflect on the experience, on the opportunity, on the relationships, on the work…and when knowing that closing will come fast or it will feel like it when I’m having fun I then just try to be in the present and try to savor each moment.

Today I look back and think that in 2019 I thought that was going to be the last time I had a chance to work with UTC @urbantheater (I then joined the Union). Miranda had directed (along with @raquelenid) Back in the Day-workshop so I trusted her. Now is 2024 and Chicago Lore(s) came and @chiblaxican called, I am no longer part of the Union so I said yes. I knew it was going to be a quick turnaround process but I knew she will come prepared, that she would leave plenty of room for collaboration, artistry, individual expressions and that she will make sure we did good 😉I’m grateful I said yes and I look forward to be directed by you (again) soon.

Today I am grateful for the entire creative team, designers, SM, wardrobe, marketing, FOH. Grateful for @theetonyb for holding the fort, my cast for being beautiful humans, I look forward to working with each of you again, @jevelyng for helping our bodies tell the story when there were no words, for @mixedrootscollective for writing history and for being such a cheerleader, I am so proud of you! Grateful for all my friends who came to see me ❤️ and for every audience member who came to support us, told their people and came back. ¡Gracias!

Before we find a place in the sun and we move on, let’s do this once more!

Happy Closing Chicago Lore(s)!
