Works by Yee I-Lann are now on view in โ€๐‘บ๐’๐’‡๐’• ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’”โ€œ. These woven mats (tikars) were made with land-based communities in Sabah, extending her longstanding inquiry into representations of power shaped by colonial histories and the resilience of ancestral methods. The tikar, carried down through generations, are made with a tropical bamboo, with patterns that shimmer under light. ๐ŸŽ‹ ๐˜ฟ๐™ค๐™ค๐™ง๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™‚๐™ก๐™ž๐™™๐™š ๐™๐™š๐™›๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง (2024) depicts nine different mats, bearing patterns that carry distinct symbolisms. Two mats rise above as a door, allowing access to ancestral memories, and as an overturned table. The table, brought in by European colonizers, represents dominance administered by colonial powers, but here, it becomes upended. This work was featured in the โ€œANTEPRIMA x CHAT Contemporary Textile Art Prizeโ€ exhibition, when I-Lann won the award. The woven pattern is called โ€Mansau-ansauโ€œ, taking form in a labyrinth. The Guggenheim Museum (@guggenheim) explores the enduring influence of Pop art with Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now, an exhibition bringing together iconic works from the 1960s alongside contemporary perspectives. From Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein to todayโ€™s leading voices, the exhibition examines how artists transformed everyday imagery, consumer culture, and familiar objects into powerful reflections on society, identity, and visual culture. By elevating the ordinary into something unexpected, Pop art challenged traditional ideas of what art could be, leaving a lasting impact that continues to shape contemporary practice. On view at the Guggenheim through January 10, 2027. Watch this video on Yee I-Lann, produced by NOWNESS (@nownessasia ) for the โ€˜Meet the Artistsโ€™ series by Art Basel (@artbasel ), to learn how she weaves together ancestral knowledge, colonial history, and contemporary conditions through the tikar (woven mat in Malay). ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ Since returning to her home state of Sabah in 2017, Yee has developed collaborative mat-weaving projects with sea- and land-based communities. In the video, she discusses her ongoing collaboration with Dusun and Murut weavers from Sabahโ€™s interior, works from which will be presented in โ€œSoft Bordersโ€. Drawing on both inherited and newly created patterns, these works trace cultural heritage while metaphorically challenging hierarchical power structures and reclaiming local narratives. ๐ŸŽ‹ ๐Ÿ”— Tap the link in bio to watch the full film on NOWNESS ASIA. Upcoming Exhibition | ๐‘บ๐’๐’‡๐’• ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’” Blindspot Gallery is pleased to present โ€œ๐‘บ๐’๐’‡๐’• ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’”โ€, opening on 12 September, and on view from 15 September to 7 November 2026, featuring works by Igshaan Adams, Bi Rongrong, Kazuko Miyamoto, Angela Su, Aiko Tezuka, and Yee I-Lann. Bringing together artists across diverse geographies and material approaches, the exhibition examines how borders โ€” social, cultural, historical, and geographical โ€” are stretched, untethered, and reimagined. Themes of community, labor, technology, and globalization come into focus. While the artists engage with the logic of weaving, embroidery, and interlacing, their material vocabularies extend beyond the thread to encompass beads, wire, bamboo, hair, metal, and enamel. Textile and fiber are approached not as singular mediums, but as sites of negotiation โ€” between bodies and systems, hand and machine, softness and power. The opening reception and exhibition are by invitation and appointment only.
