Practicing regularly increases muscle tone. Within increased muscle-tone, postures can feel more integrated and balanced. Practicing on a regular basis will do the job. In weekly Yoga for Strength classes, we learn drills that build consistency in the body. Repeating these simple and relatively easy drills train both the body and mind to evolve. So, work the easy things hard so the hard things are easier. #yogastudio #yoga #albuquerque #albuquerqueyoga #somatics

So I’ve been practicing yoga since 2002. And like any story, there are ups and downs. They were times when I practiced a little and there are times when I practice a lot. The one thing though is I kept practicing. And of course that changed. The reason I practice changed and even now it can change day-to-day.

A couple weeks ago, I was able to do a pose that I have NEVER fully done before.

This was the pose that I wanted desperately at one time and let go of that desire, accepting that it’s something I just wouldn’t do this lifetime. But, I didn’t stop practicing and low and behold I did the thing…

I did Natarajasana or Dancer Pose!!!!

My happy place is my yoga practice. When I step on the mat I begin in child pose (balasana) or mountain pose (tadasana). I begin with the foundational postures and build my pose from the ground up, aligning myself with my breath and the templates to organize my physical body, mind and heart. This work follows my practice from the beginning to the end. This allows me to let everything else fall away. What does that mean? What falls away for me are my desires and my fears and I’m able to zoom out to see a bigger picture. From this perspective, the pose and creation process become manageable, making space for me to continue along the path to expand my postures and my heart. This whole process takes focus, dedication, surrender, and buckets and buckets of love. This is where I’ve learned to accept myself for who I am and to offer myself unconditional love. Love is the magic. And, our hearts are full of love. My practice helped me see that. #alopecia #yoga #alopeciafeminina #alopeciabeauty #alopecialife

Each year for Halloween, we dress up Bhava’s skeleton, Vlad. And, Halloween is just around the corner. This year we took suggestions from the community and everyone put their votes in to a little jack-o’-lantern box. The suggestions arranged from Dolly Parton to Dr. Frank-N-Furter and many fun suggestions in between. Come down to Bhava and see Vlad‘s new Halloween costume. #halloween #yogastudio #albuquerque

In my experience, we all want to connect with and relate to others. There are many times in my life where I spoke to strangers because I connected with something I saw. In most cases these interactions are fun, short and engaging.

But, sometimes they’re not. When you look at someone else and connect only through something you see, that may not be the whole picture.

These impromptu connections can also go the other way and expand our understanding of life and the world around us.

With Alopecia, there are many assumptions from others. One of the most challenging is when people assume I have cancer and want to connect on that because they have had cancer or they know someone who has had cancer and have lost their hair as a result. Losing your hair to cancer is intense and we often want to relate to others and comfort others who are going through the same challenging experience. (This is also human nature.)

This is where yoga has helped me. When I was approached by a woman who consoled me because she thought I had cancer, I was able to stay calm and respond with kindness instead of being defensive (my usual reaction when people are wrong about me). The trick is to stay connected through challenge without running away or shutting down.

September is alopecia awareness month. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that affects the hair. With all autoimmune diseases, our own body is attacking itself. And in the case of alopecia, it is attacking the hair follicles. The result is the hair falls out and the follicle may be damaged or destroyed. There are three primary forms of alopecia: alopecia areata, alopecia, totalis, and alopecia universalis. These types of alopecia
range from small patches of hair loss on the head to losing all the hair on the body.

This disease can affect the body at any age. Some people have it from birth and others experience it later in life. Regardless, losing one’s hair in any amount is challenging to our identity, our confidence and how seen.

We all know someone with alopecia whether we are aware or not. Like many autoimmune diseases, it can be hidden in plain sight because it is safer to maintain the status quo. It feels safer to fit in than risk the being exposed.

It is safer to hide the symptoms of alopecia but not easier. It feels like you are not yourself anymore. And, if you’re not yourself, then who are you now?

Struggling with identity damages self-confidence and can feel isolating and life crushing. Living like this on top of life’s pressures takes a toll and can even make the situation worse. Sound familiar?

For me, practicing yoga helped. I was able to move forward with alopecia because of my daily choice to practice. It taught me how to accept myself with the loss of my hair. It wasn’t easy. I still am taken aback when I catch glance of myself in a mirror but, it’s getting easier each day.

Because “…the quicker I accept it, the quicker I can help other people accept it too.” (Heather Fisher Retired English rugby union and sevens player).

Self-acceptance is the journey to healing and falling in love with yourself.
