Fun fact — much of the material on ‘silence is a sharpened blade’ (out now on @dinzuartefacts ) was originally composed for a live performance installation with movement artist Yoko Murakami at Mabou Mines. This video pulls from the original 3-channel installation I created for the performance folded into a single frame. The piece is “Blues for Bill Orcutt” If this resonates, grab the limited edition set of 5 (with genius homies Laura Cocks, Camilo Angeles, Lester St. Louis, and Carlo Costa) on the Dinzu Bandcamp before they disappear—link in bio @_aura_ocks @camiloangeles @lesterst.louis @ccaarrllooccoossttaa @palilaliarecords @yokoteki #PreparedGuitar #experimentalmusic #dinzuartefacts #billorcutt #improvisedmusic

We’re not done celebrating one of last year’s exceptional artists. ✨ The 2025 Outstanding Choreographer/Creator Bessie Award goes to Yoko Murakami @yokoteki 👏🏼 Yoko Murakami is a Tokyo-born and New York City-based artist. She creates movement-based work in forms of site-specific installations and experimental film. Her multi-disciplinary approach to performance spans collaborations in motion-capture technology, installation art, and wearable art where she continues to explore new ways to activate and question the way we interact with our environments. She has presented her creations in spaces like Mabou Mines (New York, NY), Ace Hotel (New York, NY), Triskelion Arts (Brooklyn, NY), Theaterlab (New York, NY), Da Da Da Gallery (Seattle, WA), Eshk Salon / Room Salon (Brooklyn, NY), and Aileyan Accessories (Brooklyn, NY). Her venture into experimental film has led to her works being selected and screened in festivals in Seoul, Moscow, Naples, Belfort, Cyprus, Mexico City, and Lincoln Center in NYC. Yoko is a recipient of the 2025 NYSCA grant and has served as a Bessies Award Selection Committee in 2022-2024. 🎤✨ Hear the acceptance speech in the reel. 📸 Photo Credit: Steven Pisano @steven_pisano #TheBessies #DanceAwards #NYCDance #bessies2025

Arrhythmia (2025) — excerpt, pt. 3: III. Flourish Nava Dunkelman: percussion Maria Takeuchi: electronics and visuals @emuaudiovisual Yoko Murakami: movement @yokoteki Akiha Yamakami: scenic and costume design @avakiha Performed at and documented by @roulette_intermedium June 10, 2025 The full video is available on @roulette_intermedium’s YouTube channel (link in bio). Arrhythmia—the fragile rhythm of life, suspended between steadiness and instability. As tension and release merge and reshape one another, irregularity and order find their own unsettling beauty. In their shifting balance, life reforms itself, always seeking a new rhythm. Beyond a mere pattern, it is the resonance of harmony and discord, the meaning found in both silence and sound, stillness and motion. A visceral expression of contrast, it mirrors the rhythms that shape us, break us, and bring us back together. . . . . #experimentalmusic #percussion #electronics #movement #audiovisual

Each of us has our own way to give back to the world. It's a natural process, this circulating of energy, resources, ideas. We need each other, truly. There's no other way to navigate this life. For all of you who've chosen Theaterlab as the recipient of your generosity: THANK YOU!! It's hard to believe we made it to 20 years. But we did! YES! Look at us! Look at what your continued support has produced. As we bring 2025 to a close, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of sooo many who have been impacted by Theaterlab over the years. With the hours counting down, I am positive we'll end the year with much gratitude, joy, and abundance. And in honor of all we've done this year - and all the years before - WE RAISE A GLASS TO YOU. (20 glasses to be precise, if you can find them alll). So, To all the artists who've worked with us, rented our spaces, shared ideas, and stories. To every single audience member who kept us bustling with curiosity and conversation. To the volunteers, interns, and board members who kept everything in motion. To the long-distance champions of the work we do - who've continued to love us from afar. To those we've yet to meet, but hope to soon. Without you - none of this would be possibly. Cheers to you. Cheers to all you've done. Cheers to 20 more. -------- 2026 has much in store, so we hope to see you around, and wish you the best in the days ahead. Happy New Year! With care and gratitude, 💛 All of us at Theaterlab ~~~~~~ (There are way more productions & events that happened this year that we don't have photos from - we still love you!!).

Happy to receive these great captures of Point (!blac) from Joe Kobayashi @yzrplusu. I always wish I can watch my performances with my own eyes! Discovering so many poetic moments with Fernando’s incredible visuals. Point (!blac) was performed on August 31 2025 at Theaterlab @theaterlab, with visuals/music by Fernando Molina @fermolinabrac, movement performance by Yoko Murakami @yokoteki, and assistance from Octavio Molina Zini @octamolinaz. Photography by Joe Kobayashi @yzrplusu Point (!blac) is the 2nd installment of the 3-part residency project Point ____ (Blank) by Yoko Murakami at Theaterlab. For Point (!blac), Yoko was joined by Argentinian audiovisual artist Fernando Molina. During the covid pandemic, the 2 artists collaborated on a long-distance short film project, where Fernando took the video footages of Yoko dancing, and abstracted them into architectural distortion. “!blac”, a poem by e.e.cummings became the connective bridge between the different art mediums. The resulting short film has been accepted into numerous national and international film festivals in 2022 and 2023. For this residency project at Theaterlab, Fernando and Yoko worked together in-person to create a live performance version of the short film, taking a 2-dimensional art form (film) and reinterpreting it into a 3-dimensional elusive performance experience. The culmination of the collaboration was presented at Theaterlab on August 31, 2025 followed by an informal talkback session. This project is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) @nyscouncilonthearts through the Support for Artists Grant.
