“More Than Ballers”
@yonderwalls gave us an opportunity to turn some pain into purpose through paint. This mural, created by @dawillytron and me, is dedicated to our brothers who are no longer with us but continue to make an impact on our lives and, through us, the lives of others.
Thank you again to everyone involved in making this happen! We are forever grateful! 🙏🏾🎨

It’s taken me a few days to try and gather the words for what this last week in Birmingham meant to me; several days later, I’m not so sure that I will ever have the words, so I thought I would just go ahead share some of this Magic City magic! 🐲 It was an honor and a treat to participate in Birmingham‘s first mural festival, @yonderwalls! I arrived Tuesday, filled with nerves, but excited to get started; over the course of the week, with the help of my incredible sister @hel_on_leggs , we brought this wall to life, side by side with 34 other skilled artists. The whole week, I felt beyond supported and cared for by the event organizers, volunteers, and my fellow artists. I have said this before, but sometimes mural painting can be a bit of a lonely job, and events like this remind us that we do have community and support around us, even down here in Bama. To the Yonder Walls board…thank you. A million times, thank you, you absolute icons. When people think of Alabama, I want art to be one of the things comes to mind, and you’ve done so much to enforce that vision, and to unite us all not just as artists, but as people; thank to for giving us a space to use our voices. To the volunteers, we LITERALLY couldn’t do it without you; thank you for keeping us happy and HYDRATED!💧To my fellow artists, just know I will be bragging about painting alongside you for the rest of my life; I truly felt I was in the presence of legends, and I left a peice of my heart on this landmark we made. Until next time…which is hopefully very soon 💚🧡🩵

I had the great pleasure of photographing Rosa in front of her mural for Yonder Walls (“a first-of-its-kind, large scale, public arts festival that brings together local artists and artists from over yonder to celebrate Birmingham’s commitment to the arts and to uplift our diverse voices”). I’ve been photographing Rosa for years so I was really excited for this opportunity. 💓

Here's what 50+ hours and 6 days of brush painting a mural looks like! 🎨💐

I was chosen to be a muralist for @yonderwalls Mural Festival in it's first year in Birmingham, Alabama. I got to design these bold, beautiful flowers on the building for @urbansupplybham, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out! Bright colors and florals are my favorite, so it was so amazing to bring it all together. I call this mural "Grow Wild" and I can't wait to see how far I go in the next year!

We were honored to help bring over 40 artist to 35 new murals and hundreds of volunteer hours to life this past week @yonderwalls. If we were humbled by Decks & Cans we were truly blown away by the Mural Festival

It was the convergence of our city’s creative powerhouses, emerging artist, and new friends from over yonder. I think we made Birmingham proud 🧡

Thank you @yonderwalls and @urbansupplybham for one of the best weeks of my life. I left Birmingham with my heart full and a sense of inspiration I never had. I never felt as important as an artist as the wonderful staff made us feel. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone was good in all areas, from hydration to meals and fun side quests. They made it easy to work and have fun at the same time! To come to a city and be treated like family speaks volume about Yonder Walls and the people of Birmingham. I met all these talented artists, photographers, creatives, and cool staff members for the first time. After painting with them all week it felt like I knew them for a long time. Thank you Hunter Renfroe for trusting all of us with this awesome space. Thank you to everyone at the Yonder Walls team @bendykneesdesign @seanmgilder @lydiacherie @elcreativ.e @hannah__elizabeth__ every helping hand, and everyone that took their time to come through! Shout out to @jamurai_ , he gave us a light show and set up these awesome lights that will run on the weekends 👾💥

This past Saturday, we were able to host the Kids Zone at Yonder Walls Mural Festival! 🎨

Kids and families were able to participate in interactive art projects inspired by our permanent collection and current exhibitions, which included "Roll Call" found object sculptures, wonder crowns, Dale Chihuly inspired "scrulpturews," graffiti airbrush prints, and murals in our own mural village.

Yonder Walls Mural Festival brought artists together to celebrate Birmingham's art scene. All of these 35 murals were painted in just one week! Additionally, during the week as part of the festival's mentorship program, we were able to work with 13 students, who were paired with a muralist, to paint electrical boxes.

If you didn't get to see the murals at the festival, head over to Urban Supply and check them out for yourself! Thanks to Yonder Walls for having us and to our Learning and Engagement team that made the Kids Zone possible! 👏 Two young children decorate a mini white cardboard house with colorful drawings using markers and a blue craft tool.
