Caught this a while back near the bathrooms in a bar in Joshua Tree. I like the correct punctuation. And the sentiment.

Had a blast yesterday down in Encinitas at @artifact_encinitas with JD Clapp and Jim Ruland, and thanks to Grag Mollin for hosting us, and studs like Curtis Ippoloto and Peter Bertlessen coming out to support, as well as Jens Ochlich, who I was stoked to see so I could get him some of the posters and books we’ve used his fine photography on!

I read a bit from Black Flag, and JD and Jim read from their stories in Review 8. Thanks to everybody for the great turnout! As a side note, all of the authors signed a bunch of the books, so those will be available at Artifact, both in the store and online.

Our edition of My Confession: Recollections of a Rogue contains not only the original memoir written in the 1850s by Samuel Chamberlain, but essays by Daniel Pyne, Stephanie Reents, and Manny Torres.

Read one of the inspirations for Blood Meridian, which includes many of the characters in Cormac McCarthy’s novel, such as Glanton, Tobin, Webster, Judge Holden, and more.

Waaaay back in olden days — the 1900’s — we had a wonderful magazine called Your Flesh and all us Olds used to buy it and absorb every word because there weren’t no internet! It was put together by the great and powerful Peter Davis @yourfleshmag and one time Dazzling Killmen got reviewed in it by @cliffoda03! 1994, prolly. @skingraftrecords

I was just having a conversation over the weekend concerning Huxley and Orwell’s differing visions for a dystopian future, and where we are now. It struck me that us gen xers grew up learning to fear Orwell’s version—that Big Brother was just around the corner, when it actually became Huxley’s version that came true first, with our reliance/dependence/obsession with entertainment content, the internet, and then smart phones (see quote above). But what’s happened since then—since we’ve become distracted, for lack of a more biting term, is that dependence/apathy has allowed Orwell’s vision in the door while we weren’t paying attention.

The flock cameras and recorders—both audio and visual, abound in public places now, facial recognition software is becoming ubiquitous, we have algorithms directed entirely on consumerism, and now the killswitches in cars starting next year, all reek of a surveillance state (not a lot of ‘freedom’ there yeah?), which sound an awful lot like Big Brother. And this is not some wild conspiracy take, this is actually happening, in real time, right in front of us.

Huxley wrote BNW, amazingly, in the early 30’s. Nearly a hundred years ago. Orwell wrote 1984 in 1949. Seems to me that both messages came to fruition, at least partially, with BNW in the front and 1984 the back end. Now we gotta dig ourselves out of it.
