Back in 1985 my roommate Dave Clark and I had originally wanted to attend the three-headed hydra of Venom/Slayer/Exodus at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Sadly though, due to work schedules the timing was bad. So, instead we were left with our only option: a miserable 10-hour drive to Winnipeg, back when the speed limit was 55. Anyone who lived through that era and drove for any distance knows the pain.

We stayed with Billy from the Stretch Marks—good peeps. Cronos (rip) was saving his voice for the show, so he didn’t attend the interview, and I wound up yapping with Abaddon instead. Not something I was prepared for, but I managed fine. I recall the hotel the promoters housed the band at as being pretty scroungy. Strong notes of nose funk wafted throughout.

Later that night, before the show I came down with a nasty flu bug to which during the show the only real comfort I got—I kid not—was from the physical heat coming off Venom’s flash pots… ➡️

The following morning, we skedaddled back to Minneapolis. At the border the Slayer guys were already there. Of course, they were being held up by U.S. Customs. They had ’em lined up in seats in the hallway, interrogating them one by one while they tossed the band’s van and now our car too. It wasn’t like we were traveling together BUT we looked like birds of the same feather so a fait accompli for the men of customs, right?

During that time while we were cooling our heels waiting for them do their dirt, I remember Lombardi had button-holed me asking, “why don’t you interview us? We’re as good as Venom. Hell, I think we’re better!” And all the while the agent left to watch over us is giving us the stink-eye, so yeah, Dave, sorry, much as I would have liked to, “now’s not really a good time.” The tape deck was out in our car, and it wasn’t looking like any of us were free to go as we pleased.

You could tell Lombardo was kind of nervous about the whole scenario and at one point said he was concerned they might all be “getting the rubber glove” exam at the rate things were going. He’s all fidgety, and who could blame him? ➡️

So, anyway after about 30 minutes of awkwardness, the roomie and I get cut loose, with neither taken in Los Angeles, California by @yourfleshmag

Sometimes known by the self-given sobriquet of Ass Joker, Kevin Visvaldis Rutmanis (@k_rutmanis1983), the Latvian flat foot, was the prodigious bass-thumper for COWS and once upon a time MELVINS.

Pictured here by yours truly at the Uptown Bar sometime in the late 80s. Some kind of happy accident makes him appear as tho his hair’s on fire, which given the way he performed live is fairly accurate. I don’t believe there’s a single musician who has approached the instrument with his flair for originality and gift for the deep bottom groove—certainly not in the field of “noise rock”—and often times with buckets of literal drool thrown in for measure. (Shades of Paul Leary?)

Haven’t heard much new music from the pair since the Trevor Dunn collaboration but Kevin has been churning out a consistent gush of visual art worth your peep-time…

Shannon Selberg of @cows_repository at The Uptown Bar, Minneapolis, MN. LATE 80s. One of the best frontmen of the era to ever do it. Semi-unrecognized midwest kingpins.

Noise rock? Pffft. More like a hooky sonic maelstrom coupled with performance art. I know people, some of which run prominent Indy labels who have admitted to me that while they loved the band they also were scared shitless of them and that’s mostly due to this guy. Go figure.

If ever there was an argument to be had for buying a record for only one song, WRONG WAY, the closing number on the debut EP by DRAGNET (@totalpunk45s) is that diamond laying in wait. The guitar “solos” are brittle little explosive bytes that fire those neurons and short-circuit the synapses and with lyrical sentiment that parallels my waffling misanthropy perfectly. Run don’t walk. The whole record is solid, but this song makes it a keeper. 🎸💥
