A small Japan/painting study I haven’t previously shared. The Chrysanthemum pattern is painted in gold, and has a spiraling growth pattern. I’m most interested in underlying interlocking spirals, and their interchange of energy (+ its symbolism). But the colors & touch are what give it some force.

Small Painting Study/Japan -
An optical, vibratory field of hand painted pattern, like many mantras marking time, space & ephemerality. The pattern itself has protective energies- and how do you read it? As a gingko leaf, pine, a folding fan?

I don’t YET have my full level of dexterity & stamina back after a hand/wrist injury & surgery from 6 months ago. But I look forward to when I will - and I can do these intricate gold waves again. ✨

Detail of a painting that is probably finished, but maybe not. The in-between state. For me & my paintings. A dialogue, a conversation, a letting go eventually. Sometimes it’s very clear when we’re done. Often it takes time to see it. Or it needs more- Did enough happen in this experience?

Collages & Limited Edition Archival Prints ✨
.
Here are a batch of my more recent favorites- of original handmade collages in black bound books. They are like little quick paintings - over the years (I started in 1997 as a secret practice) they have become more abstract. They are spatial, textural, playful, I hope surprising and unexpected. They help me access the imaginal, dreamworld through color, texture, memory. And when I get stuck in my painting practice, I move to making these in order to open up stuck pathways, get into play & pleasure, and tap into freshness and a deeper mindspace.

I am currently offering a limited number of private one-on-one art sessions for artists and creative practitioners who are already in relationship with their work (in whatever state that may be). This includes visual artists, as well as writers, performers, musicians, therapists, and others who are moving toward visual art as a parallel or emerging practice. And who want to grow their potential and possibilities.

These sessions aren’t about instruction - they’re more like sitting together with the work - looking, listening, noticing patterns, tensions, and possibilities. A space to explore, articulate what’s present, what feels alive, and what may want more time or care. I offer reflection, feedback, and context, drawing from visual art practices, art history, shadow work, archetypes, tools, and imaginal inquiry, always in response to what you and your work are asking. And attuned to the particular intelligence of your work.

Other things we may address include materials, processes, creating more flow in the studio, techniques, resources, and if desired, ways to share your work in the world.

Sessions are held on Zoom, with some in-person sessions in LA available. I work in short series as well as longer ongoing engagements.

If this feels aligned, I’m happy to offer a 20 minute Zoom conversation to see if the work is a good fit. Email carole@carolesilverstein.com to schedule a conversation.

The world needs your gold and your light.

A shout out for the power & impact of my paintings from my dear friend, and therapist/coach @kristansargeant:

“As a therapeutically trained coach, the work I do with people in the unconscious can feel intangible and abstract but it has profound practical implications for how people perceive and lead their lives. When people are able to grasp and then surrender their primitive survival program, a world of possibility opens that was previously imperceptible and inaccessible. I am so lucky to have Carole’s beautiful, evocative paintings hanging on my office walls. They serve as a silent but powerful ally to the work. Carole’s treatment of light, color, symbol and pattern create a bridge to the unseeable world most have lost touch with. They issue a moving reminder of the sacred and numinous, granting permission to those who bathe in their presence to dare to dream again.”

Soon I will be in Japan. The photo of this painting is taken at its peak illumination. It shifts in changing light - in time, with your movement & perception. What do I desire to find and explore in the art, architecture & culture of Japan? Well, first, I expect to be surprised and opened up to new perspectives- in time & space & consciousness. As one does with travel. Expanding perspectives, insights, experiences. One can only understand swimming by getting in the water. To understand buoyancy, wetness, fluidity.
.
This is a spiritual & artistic pilgrimage for me. Something about empty space, sacred space, ritual, devotion, beauty, somatic immersion, precision, care. My heart has been taking me there for a long time through my art. I travel to many places through the imaginative exploration of ornamentations & art. What will I discover once there, and how will it change me?

So happy to have a drawing included in this exhibition @wonzimer in downtown LA on Friday! Opening Reception is 5-10pm at
341 S Avenue 17, LA 90031

From the press release:@wonzimer Gallery is proud to present “Drawing from Imperfectionism,” a group exhibition that stands as a philosophical counterpoint to our contemporary search for perfection. Curated by artist @therealalaia , this show is an ode to the beauty found in flaws, accidents, and the unique, irreplaceable nature of human creation.

The exhibition features a diverse collection of drawings, each a final work of art that embraced the principles of Imperfectionism. This movement, founded by Parhizi in 2014, challenges the anthropocentric belief that we can control our world and destiny. Instead, it finds grace in the humility of flawed forms - a philosophy that has deep roots in traditions from Japanese Wabi-Sabi to deliberate “mistakes” in Islamic art and the subconscious-driven accidents of Dada and Surrealism.

Exhibiting Artists:

Here’s a look back to another painting where I used the “blown-away roof style”, abstracted from the 12th C. Heian Japanese handscroll “The Tale of Genji”. I quite love this more mysterious one - and the way the black & white Moroccan pattern switches to looking like lace when done in white outline. The ambiguous spatial shifts, the washy color of the blue-purple…..

As I am embarking upon a new journey to a long held dream to go to Japan this Fall, I am revisiting thinking about paintings like this one - “these languages of reverence”. One abstracted compositional source here is the 12th Century Heian Tale Of Genji Handscroll, a National Treasure of Japan, painted by the women of the court and based on the first novel of Japan, also written by a woman. I first came across this source in my early 20s at The Art Institute of Chicago. The sophisticated use of the decorative and the spatial ambiguity of its perspective “blown away roof style” captured me in the deepest of ways. It still does.
.
In 2019 when I went to NYC on a pilgrimage to see the magnificent Hilma at Klimt Show at the spiral temple of The Guggenheim, I also unexpectedly stumbled upon a “Tale of Genji” show at The Met. I almost cried with delight at the serendipity. The magic of it.
.
After much longing I will be going to Japan on an Art Research Trip. The planning has begun and I’d love any art suggestions & resources. Guides, tips, things not to miss. I have a list of course, but could use some concrete artistic resources & suggestions! Planning is its own kind of research. Research meets serendipity meets open possibilities to be deeply moved and changed on this life changing trip.
