Three Space Tokyo
「Spirits in the Rice Field」

During the exhibition “Spirits in the Rice Field”, a performance by Yuko Uchida, in collaboration with @3space2move, was presented.

Inspired by the folk belief that “seven spirits reside within a single grain of rice,” the performance introduced masks symbolizing seven elements: water, earth, wind, sun, clouds, insects, and farmers.

Through the presence of these masks, the installation space was transformed into a temporary site of ritual.

Masks are one of the artist’s primary modes of expression, historically used in Japan as a medium for connecting with spiritual beings and ritual practices.

The performance became a moment where body and space, belief and memory, intersected.

We are also grateful to the sake brewery @nitomaruishi from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture — the artist’s hometown — for sponsoring the opening night with their sake, which became part of the evening’s sensory experience of Japanese culture and hospitality.

The exhibition continues through May 31.
Thu–Sun, 13:00–18:00

Upcoming Exhibition: Spirits in the Rice Field — Yuko Uchida

In this exhibition, the Brooklyn-based Japanese multidisciplinary artist Yuko Uchida draws from Japanese agricultural and spiritual traditions to explore the deep connections between nature, labor, and cultural memory. Rooted in an animistic perspective, the installation brings together rice and straw—materials that carry both physical and symbolic weight—to evoke the unseen presence within nature.

As part of the exhibition, a live performance will activate the installation as a contemporary ritual space. Inspired by the belief that seven spirits reside within a single grain of rice—water, soil, wind, sun, cloud, insects, and the farmer—performers embody these forces through movement, sound, and presence. Through repetition, improvisation, and sensory interaction with the materials, the work unfolds as a living offering, inviting reflection on the interdependence between humans, nature, and the unseen.

開催予定の展覧会：「Spirits in the Rice Field 」 — 内田裕子

Now on view @airgallery through February 8! ⛰️

Many thanks to friends past, present and future who showed up for the opening. What a delight to see so many intersections of people engaging with the work on a lot of different levels. Especially all the kids who helped activate the work with their presence while I was secretly crying about the absence of my own. Many many thanks to @elizabeth.wiet who wrote a beautiful piece of text for the show. Thank you all for being stranded on the island with me for a little while. 🏝️ 💫

The (Secret) Garden, an installation by Yuko Uchida, is up at Hudson Guild Gallery, 441 West 26th Street, through November 19.

The installation inspired by the artist’s engagement with the spirit of nature and folklore, expressed through her style of fantasy narrative. The installation uses painting, sculpture, and recycled materials to explore themes related to our collective hope for the environment. The philosophy of Japanese animism – the belief that all of nature has a life force – deeply informs the project.

In conjunction with the show, we held workshops for participants of all ages from the community where they created their own “creatures” inspired by nature and daily life, to express their environmental hopes. The creatures crafted during the workshops are now integrated into the installation on display.

Viewing Hours:
Tuesdays - Fridays 10:00AM - 6:00PM
& Saturdays 12:00pm-3:00pm
