Mentors, and masterminds. The constellation of artists that @qvarantine.events secures for its semi-annual gatherings is exceptional. I had the good fortune of working in Qvarantine’s StudioLab last April for ‘Tears in Rain’, the art experiment featuring Yulia Bas, Phil Hale, Sean Layh, Adam Miller, Mu Pan, Yuko Shimizu, and Martin Wittfooth. These are medium format portraits I shot of these stars between Masterclasses, as well as the founders, Carles and Itziar, masterminds of this Menorcan delirium. Thanks to every one of you. The October edition, ‘Hunter’s Moon’, arrives in close conjunction with the recent solar eclipse. These can be dark and disorienting days, but the stars are coming into alignment once again. “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.” I’m with Marcus Aurelius. There is still time to apply. DM Qvarantine for details.

Before Yulia’s work leaves Barcelona for Palazzo Bembo in Venice, we visited her studio to see the finished piece up close.

Created as part of Yulia’s work for the DOM Digital Residency, this armor is made entirely from inner bra pads - bringing vulnerability and strength into the same form. Something intimate becomes a shield, yet one that could never truly stop a weapon.

The contradiction raises a bigger question: where does our protection actually come from?

From the structures around us - family, community, society - or from something we ultimately have to build within ourselves?

An exploration of womanhood, safety, visibility, and the desire to be both protected and seen.

Through our studio and the shainy tool, we’ve already worked with dozens of creators, and none of them had to post every single day.

That includes creators who grew to 100K+ followers and repeatedly sold out their lunches. The effect of content on @shainystudio works more like a compounding effect: one post builds on the previous one, then the next one works even better, and so on.

In general, the optimal pace for building momentum is around 1–4 posts per week.

What has your own experience with posting been like? What kind of rhythm do you usually follow, and do you feel that posting more frequently actually helps, or not necessarily?

This August, Yulia Bas @yulia__bas develops her project for DOM Art Residence as part of Personal Structures 2026 @ecc_italy

Working from the body as a site of memory and sensitivity, she explores protection, boundaries, and vulnerability through an armor made from soft, intimate materials.

Her process is being streamed throughout August as part of the DOM Digital Residency.

I was honoured to create a portrait series of Yulia Bas and photograph several of her works — one of the most compelling voices in contemporary art today. Based in Barcelona, Yulia works across painting, sculpture, installation and performance, exploring fragmented identity, transformation and the body as a vessel of memory
