✨ CHARITY SPOTLIGHT ✨

For our very first Belting for a Benefit, we’re proud to support the YWCA Metro St. Louis — an organization working to create safer, stronger, and more equitable communities across St. Louis.

The YWCA provides critical programs and services supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, while also creating opportunities for education, empowerment, and economic independence.

We believe that when we invest in organizations doing meaningful work at the community level, we help create lasting change.

Join us on October 4 as we come together to raise funds and awareness for the YWCA Metro St. Louis through an afternoon of music, community, and giving.

(17/22) “My next position was at the @ywcastl as the first director of racial justice, where I had to have a signature program that could be replicated with other YWCAs. So I wondered, ‘What’s our signature program gonna be?’ I looked at a bunch of programs bringing Black and white people together, but they weren’t really working. And as I ran it by Black people, they let me know, ‘Oh god, it’s so hard. We’re so over it.’ So I figured maybe we could have two groups. I’d have a group for people of color, called Mosaic, that could be about internalized oppression, loving ourselves, and all the ways in which race has adversely affected our lives. And I’d have a group for white people. Nobody believed it could happen.

I read all these books by white people, and Witnessing Whiteness, by Shelly Tochluk, had a free curriculum. I thought, ‘I’m gonna start this one.’ But the book was out of print. So, how do you get a book back in print? You call the publisher. They said, ‘We’ll print the book for you. But we have to do it in batches of 100 copies.’ At the time, it would cost about $1,000. So Pat Cox, a volunteer at the YWCA, stepped up. She said, ‘I’ll buy the books. And as people join the group, we’ll sell them, and I’ll get paid back.’ And in 2008, that’s what we did. Pat was lovely, totally supportive, and one of the co-facilitators. But I couldn’t get anybody else to cover all 12 chapters. We’d read two chapters at a time, and nobody would commit to all six meetups.

I called my white allies, who said they’d each commit to one. They also said, ‘You’re crazy. White people are not gonna get together and do this.’ Well, there were 30 people in the first cohort. So after they graduated, about 25 met up to debrief. Having new facilitators each time didn’t work. And I couldn’t get more people to lead because talking to white people about racism, the consensus was, ‘Nah, it’s never gonna work.’ But participants in the initial group said, ‘If you teach us how to facilitate, we’ll take on the next groups.’

So we met and went chapter by chapter, and as I was doing it, they watched me. Then…”

What a pleasure to meet with the YWCA of Metro St. Louis! 🧡 I was able to drop off donations from our donation drive with the @themissmissouriorg local titleholders and have great discussions about the needs of women in Missouri to better protect them from domestic/sexual violence and trafficking as well as how we can work to end the cycle of violence in our communities.

This is a piece of art I made in 2018 for the @ywcastl Whispers and Roars show. I wish I had/could find better photos of it 😕 But anyway it’s a pedestal, and a framed mirror has fallen off of it and shattered. Each piece of broken glass has a word on it - fathers, husbands, actors, politicians, priests, musicians, comedians, baristas, activists… All too relevant, yesterday, the last few months, and always.
