We kicked off the Sunday Afternoon at the Gallery, Artists Talks Program - Portia Geach Award 2026 with three artists @z.y.o.e Zoe Young @zuzazochowski @nk_nk_ Nicole Kelly. It was an entertaining and informative afternoon with Zoe (hands full with microphone) shedding her cue cards to the floor as she spoke, not intentional but a great moment when she saw the mirrored composition in her painting of Kumi Tagochi. Big thank you to all three artists who all traveled from outside of Sydney to be there.
And thanks to Zuza for the flowers from your garden, it reminded me of your watercolour flower paintings 🩷
Next Sunday October 18 at 3pm
Carmel Byrne, Katherine Edney, Jane Guthleben
Sunday October 25 at 3pm
Phoebe Bell, Marina Finlay, Vanessa Wright
See you in the gallery.

A pleasure to listen to @z.y.o.e speak about her entry into the Portia Geach Memorial Award @shervingallery today. Fascinating to learn about her approach to her subject Kumi Taguchi, her early life and artistic journey.

Philip Bacon Galleries congratulates Zoe Young on being shortlisted as a finalist for the Portia Geach Memorial Award at S.H. Ervin Gallery for her portrait of Kumi Taguchi, one Australia’s most accomplished journalists and broadcasters.

First awarded in 1965, the Portia Geach Memorial Award is annually presented to an Australian female artist for the best portrait painted from life of a man or woman distinguished in art, letters or the sciences. This year’s recognition follows Young's win in 2018, with a portrait of the film and opera director Bruce Beresford titled ‘Drawing Storyboards', 2018.

Young will be discussing her work alongside fellow 2026 finalists Nicole Kelly and Zuza Żochowski from 3pm on Sunday 11 October at S.H. Ervin Gallery @shervingallery.

Zoe Young – Short Stories
Exhibition closes 5 September

Early years travelling rurally and internationally as the youngest of four children meant Young grew up exploring the nuances of different cultures from an early age. Her family were pioneers of European hospitality, opening various hotels and cafes around Australia. Zoe spent most of her childhood in the ski lodge designed by renowned architect Glenn Murcutt on the border of the Kosciusko National Park. Now living and working in the Southern Highlands and a mother of two, Young is “trying to decipher how to live by looking backwards at my parents and forwards for my kids.”

Please visit the gallery or view the exhibition online via our website (link in bio).
