Good to be back down to earth in my happy place, painting from life, in the kitchen garden today, it’s always a race aginst the sun when painting outdoors, to capture the forms before the shadows change. by @z.y.o.e

Zoe Young – Short Stories
Exhibition closes 5 September

Early years travelling rurally and internationally as the youngest of four children meant Young grew up exploring the nuances of different cultures from an early age. Her family were pioneers of European hospitality, opening various hotels and cafes around Australia. Zoe spent most of her childhood in the ski lodge designed by renowned architect Glenn Murcutt on the border of the Kosciusko National Park. Now living and working in the Southern Highlands and a mother of two, Young is “trying to decipher how to live by looking backwards at my parents and forwards for my kids.”

“There is a modernity and immediacy to Zoe’s approach that is incredibly appealing, a very definite feeling of an original approach to figurative painting. Her works portray an individual voice and extraordinary sense of composition and colour that have universal appeal.” Philip Bacon

Until 5 September

Zoe Young’s new exhibition, Short Stories, is her first exhibition with Philip Bacon Galleries after a small suite of works were displayed and sold in 2025. Across still life, portraiture, and abstraction, Young’s work captures fleeting moments transforming everyday settings and objects into idyllic and evocative scenes. Her compositions hold a unique emotional depth, evoking nostalgia and connecting individual stories with broader human emotions.

Rgeister in Bio for catalogue.

‘Ode to Joy’ is a tapestry of sorts. I hope it awakens everyone’s inner Olivia.

I’m especially fond of this weave because, when I was born, my seven-year-old sister insisted my middle name must be Olivia.

My father reckons he was the first person to take a Beatles record to the ski resorts of St.Anton in Austria in the 60’s. Music was essential in the studio as I looked backwards and forwards through reckonings, folklore and anecdotes to build up, Chapter One of ALPINE WAY.
