This pairing of picture books ponders what it means to be unique, using birds as a theme. THE WHITE RAVEN by @kathrynotoshi wonders if a white raven will be rejected by its flock for being different and how it will cope. She notes that a group of ravens is called an “unkindness.” It turns out in real life that there are thriving families of white ravens in Alaska and Canada. // THE LANGUAGE OF BIRDS by @jelappano and illustrated by @zachmanbeck introduces the reader to Mira, a young girl who has a gift for understanding birds but struggles with people. But when a new boy comes to school, her crow friend helps her use art instead of words to connect. // Both these picture books are great for #backtoschool as they remind us about the power of kindness and compassion, and the power of being unique.

Albi e accoglienza!
Buona lettura a tutti!

The Language of Birds is a 2025 picture book about a girl named Mira and is better with birds than with people. When she meets a new kid at school that seems to get trees like she gets birds, a possible friendship blooms.

On a hot summer evening set beneath a blanket of twinkling stars, a sleepy child travels through a lush dreamscape. Accompanied by forest friends with balloons, they enjoy a country fair with a carousel and caramel apples before taking a fantastical trolley ride to a marvelous, light-filled destination.

Bright Lights and Summer Nights, written by Shauntay Grant and illustrated by Zach Manbeck.

I’ve had a few emails from people telling me they are making Shelf Editions part of their summer holidays. I love this and feel very special that you would go out your way to visit this little shop. So I thought it was best to let you know our summer opening hours and days.

10am - 5pm, Tuesday - Saturday

EXCEPT for:

- Tuesday 4th August

- And then we will be closed for a whole week from 23rd August and will reopen 1 September, as I need to recharge ready for a full autumn.

Online will still be open, I may just be a bit slower prepping them, and any orders made in the last week of August will be packaged and send on my return.

Any questions let me know, Lark Books will be open as usual.

Hope you have a wonderful summer that is filled with lots of reading and down time.

MANOLO AND THE UNICORN is about a little boy who believes in the most magical thing of all a unicorn when his classmates tell him they don’t exist. A story about believing in who you are.

My son @jonahekramer and I wrote this together, and during Pride Month I’m reminded that we have the freedom to write stories like this.

Especially during the current political climate where support for marriage equality is declining. It is invaluable to show up and support the LGBTQ+ community. As an ally I hope that MANOLO AND THE UNICORN can be a source of light for those who need it.

Sfogliate, scoprite, lasciatevi sorprendere ✨.

📖 buone letture a tutt*
