Making new friends as an adult isn’t easy. Add moving to a new city, and it can feel even harder. Even six years after moving from New York City to Nashville, I’m still finding my people here. And despite working in marketing and communications, I’m actually a bit more reserved than people might expect, so walking into a room full of strangers and introducing myself doesn’t always come naturally.

I’ve been thinking about last week’s Pride Dinner ever since.

Huge thanks to @zackgrady for bringing together such an intentional group of people—many of whom I may never have met otherwise. Before long, after a cocktail or two and a few introductions from some people far more extroverted than I am, the conversations started flowing. It didn’t take long for me to realize that although we came from different cities, careers, and backgrounds, I found myself connecting with people over so many shared experiences. Whether we were talking about moving to Nashville, building community, or simply finding our place, the conversations felt genuine from the start.

Evenings like this don’t happen by accident. They happen because someone like Zack takes the time to bring together thoughtful people, and because Soho House creates a place where those connections can grow. I’m grateful for both.

I walked away with new friends, a full heart, and a reminder that community is built one conversation, one introduction, and one shared table at a time.

I stood in line outside Pride and Progress on June 6th, my first Pride event in almost two years, quietly running the numbers on whether I still belonged there.

Melissa read my face before I said a word. Walk in like everyone’s on their best behavior, she told me. I believed her.

Inside, Zack found me and said something I wasn’t ready to believe yet: you always have a seat at my table.

It took three more weeks, and one belonging dinner, before I caught up to what he meant.

I wrote the whole thing down. Twenty-three months of convincing myself this community had erased me, and what happened when a room full of people quietly decided the loudest version of that story wasn’t the last one.

New essay, link in bio. Pride was never supposed to live in one month. Belonging doesn’t expire.
