A moment to meet and celebrate our extraordinary cast and crew, many of whom know this world intimately, who came together last night as one big beautiful community for the premiere of Unauthorised Absence! ✨💛 For a film born from such pain and deafening silence, last night was a very loud and joyful moment to be seen and to be heard. There were people in the room from entertainment, education, law, politics and psychology. To everyone waiting to watch at home - thank you for your patience. We know it’s been a long wait, and making the film available online is a priority for us. CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER!! 🥳 You hopefully saw recently that Unauthorised Absence made it to the Longlist, and then the shortlist(!) of the British Short Film Awards, presented by Claudia Winkleman at the BFI in December. Well, while the film itself didn’t progress to the nominations for Best Short, our hopes of meeting Claudia Winkleman are not dashed yet!! A number of our team have just been recognised for their exceptional work in the craft award longlist 🤩 For Casting, @emmasylvestercasting For Costume Design, @louisaparris For Editing, @zebeditor For Score, @isineraycomposer For Screenplay, @jolovesdancing For Sound Design, @udyt Congratulations, we are rooting for all of you talented and wonderful people!! ✨ We’ve been shortlisted for an AMA ✨ And honestly, as I was making this little poster, something dawned on me. Our lovely little film is the only film in this category centred on the story of South Asian women, directed by a British Indian woman. That is not a small thing. We’re sitting alongside some huge productions and platforms, including work I’ve genuinely loved this year. And amongst all of that, there is this deeply personal, independently originated film about a British Punjabi mother and her daughters, alcoholism, grief, secrecy, healing and what happens when a family finally decides to speak. My first film for television. I originated it, produced it, directed it and lived it. And seeing it continue to travel, move people and now be recognised by an organisation dedicated to celebrating talent, drive and innovation across British Asian media feels pretty epic. Thank you to whoever nominated us. Thank you to my incredible collaborators at @dancingledge, everyone at @channel4documentaries who believed in this journey, and every single person who touched this film and helped me carry it into the world. And particularly to the women of colour who brought their talent, care and perspective to this project. When one of us gets through the door, I really believe we all move forward. I’m also so happy to see No Shame, Just Stories of Survival, @anishavasanicreates International Women’s Day campaign for The Fashion Brunch, which we were part of earlier this year, recognised too. ❤️ Whether we win or not, this already means something to me. Because underrepresented stories don’t need to sit at the edges of our industry. They can stand alongside the biggest platforms, productions and marketing budgets and hold their own. ✨ TRAILER RELEASE! ✨ We are incredibly proud to finally share the trailer for Unauthorised Absence!! And what a day to do it! The film has just been featured by The Contending - a film and TV publication covering the Oscars and wider awards season! 🤩 Seeing this story reach an international film audience is truly extraordinary. Thank you so much for shining a light on it. At the heart of Unauthorised Absence is a mother fighting to protect her autistic daughter, caught in an impossible position between caring for a child in severe school distress and complying with the demands of an education system that continually mistakes that distress for defiance. When she turns to the institutions designed to support them for help, she is met with blame, fines and threats of prosecution instead, pushing them both to breaking point. This is something that far too many families will recognise. Our hope has always been to use the tools and the power of film to create something that makes those families feel seen, and helps those who have never experienced this understand what might be happening behind closed doors. To everyone who has helped us bring it to the screen, and everyone who has been patiently cheering us on: thank you. We’re so excited to share this first glimpse with you!! Before it's even been seen by the world, Unauthorised Absence has made it onto the longlist for the British Short Film Awards, hosted by Claudia Winkleman in November! 🤩 This is an incredible honour - we recognise many of the brilliant films that are also listed, and are overjoyed to be alongside them. We are so proud of the film we have made, and it is all thanks to the level of care and attention to detail that the cast, crew, and all our supporters who pitched in, have shown it. We’re so excited to share these behind the scenes photos and celebrate the MANY brilliant and talented women whose creativity, leadership and craft are bringing Unauthorised Absence to life! 💃 Our film is very proud to be women-led, both on and off screen, with ✨over 80%✨of the creative and technical heads of department roles filled by women. By way of comparison, women across the UK screen industries hold around 31% of directing, 35% of writing, 43% of producing, 30% of editing, and just 14% of cinematography roles, highlighting just how much work remains to achieve gender parity behind the camera. A small, personal film. No big budget. No big names. Just a daughter, her mum, and a story that needed to be told. This week, Saving Mum was commended at the @sandfordawards St. Martin Trust Awards - recognised among programmes that engage with ethics, spirituality, and the subjects that make us truly think, feel, and connect. To be seen in that remit, in that room, means more than I can easily say. So many people came to tell me they want to watch it, or watch it again with their families. As a storyteller, that’s everything. And I’ll keep saying it for as long as it needs saying: alcoholism exists everywhere. Addiction exists in every kind of family. And there are people right now trying to find a way forwards - even if that journey starts quietly, within themselves. Saving Mum is available on Channel 4OD and Channel 4 YouTube Documentaries. If I had 15 minutes at Sheffield DocFest this year, I’d remind every filmmaker in the room of one thing: Create from mission. Not from trends. Not from urgency. Not from the pressure to prove yourself. Create because something matters deeply enough that you cannot look away. Documentary filmmaking taught me that some stories refuse to be rushed. Long before AI accelerated our expectations of what can be made, how quickly it can be made, and how much content can be produced, there was something else: observation. The patience to witness. The courage to stay. The willingness to spend months, sometimes years, following a thread of truth wherever it leads. Two years ago, I knew nobody in film and television. I wasn’t part of any cohorts. I hadn’t won any awards. I didn’t know commissioners. I had never made a feature documentary. What I did have was a story. A mission. And a deep belief that storytelling remains one of the most powerful forces we have. I arrived at Sheffield DocFest 2024 with a sizzle reel, a lot of hope, and absolutely no idea what would happen next. A year later, I returned with a completed film, surrounded by some of the most talented women of colour in the industry, previewing my documentary at the Channel 4 First Cut Pitch. The year after that, the film had gone on to receive support from BAFTA, win an RTS Award, screen around the UK, and spark conversations about addiction, grief, shame, healing, identity and belonging in communities that are still too often absent from our screens. This reel captures the final stages of making Saving Mum and getting it ready for its trailer preview at Sheffield DocFest last year. As challenging as it was to spend ten weeks in the edit, facing every part of myself through the story, I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with anyone else. A year on, I miss those humans. I miss the conversations, the laughter, the breakthroughs, the moments when a story finally reveals what it’s trying to say. Most of all, I miss making films with them. I hope we get to do it again one day. 💛
