What a fabulous way to begin my midlife crisis. A weekend away in a bougie beachfront apartment with a bunch of my favourite people basking in sunshine and love. I am so grateful to be blessed with the best, and funniest of friends, who've seen me through ups and downs over the decades (!!!)
Even Mother Nature came out to razzle dazzle.
I am a lucky lucky lady ❤️✨

The party is far from over. To be continued on another dancefloor soon. 💃🏽🕺🏾 by @zebeditor

✨ We’ve been shortlisted for an AMA ✨

And honestly, as I was making this little poster, something dawned on me.

Our lovely little film is the only film in this category centred on the story of South Asian women, directed by a British Indian woman.

That is not a small thing.

We’re sitting alongside some huge productions and platforms, including work I’ve genuinely loved this year. And amongst all of that, there is this deeply personal, independently originated film about a British Punjabi mother and her daughters, alcoholism, grief, secrecy, healing and what happens when a family finally decides to speak.

My first film for television.

I originated it, produced it, directed it and lived it. And seeing it continue to travel, move people and now be recognised by an organisation dedicated to celebrating talent, drive and innovation across British Asian media feels pretty epic.

Thank you to whoever nominated us. Thank you to my incredible collaborators at @dancingledge, everyone at @channel4documentaries who believed in this journey, and every single person who touched this film and helped me carry it into the world.

And particularly to the women of colour who brought their talent, care and perspective to this project. When one of us gets through the door, I really believe we all move forward.

I’m also so happy to see No Shame, Just Stories of Survival, @anishavasanicreates International Women’s Day campaign for The Fashion Brunch, which we were part of earlier this year, recognised too. ❤️

Whether we win or not, this already means something to me.

Because underrepresented stories don’t need to sit at the edges of our industry. They can stand alongside the biggest platforms, productions and marketing budgets and hold their own.

And I intend to keep making them.

Manchester, see you at the awards. 🥹❤️‍🔥

Thank you @AsianMediaAwards. What a lovely tribute to this little film of ours. by @zebeditor

June was a fabulous month so its taken a while to catch up.
For starters, SHEFFIELD DOC Fest @sheffdocfest. One of my favourite times of the year, catching up with friends from the world of docs. As usual, very few photos on my reel.
Highlights included moderating the @snbeditors Editors Don't Grow on Trees panel with @acelya_kancelik, Pete Beard and Tom Dixon-Smith, excellently produced by @louisemassignat.
Had an inspiring time again on the @snbeditors Edit Consultant switchboard.
Saw some great films, heard some insightful talks, heard a lot of Bad Bunny, danced a bit, talked some, and laughed loads.

Let's do it all again next year!

Outfit for the panel beautifully crafted by @rosewolfreworked. taken in Sheffield, UK by @zebeditor

Are you coming to Sheffield DocFest?

Come check this!

Stitch n Bitch Editors will be offering consultancies

Thursday and Friday, from 10am
Cutler’s Hall, Sheffield

Making a documentary is a hard slog, particularly in this time of shrinking budgets and limited funding opportunities. And for independent documentary makers it can often be fairly late in their career before they get to sit down with a professional editor.

And that’s a real shame because a good documentary editor (the clue is in the name) doesn’t just push buttons: they are an integral part of the editorial process and will look at your project with the question: “how can I help this person tell the best possible story with this material?”

Stitch n bitch have assembled a panel of highly experienced editors with many festival films, TV hours and some sparkly awards under their belts, and we will be at DocFest to give you the expert edit therapy you need.

You can show up at the consultancies and book a session with our team. Bring your sizzle or an outline of your story structure. Or just bring questions about entering the industry, organising your rushes or how much edit time to allocate in your budget, there’s no problem we can’t cut through!
We’d love to see you, and to help support your film being the best it could possibly be.

Book here for Thursday slots:

Are you coming to Sheffield DocFest?
You don’t want to miss this! ✂️

Stitch N Bitch Editors are hosting a panel:
EDITORS DON’T GROW ON TREES — Expanding the editorial pool

Friday, 12th June at 2:30pm | The Workstation

Meet our Panelists:

Acelya Kancelik is an emerging documentary editor who joined Netflix’s inaugural editor progression scheme, stepping up to editor on a StoryFilms three-part series.
After studying filmmaking in Turkey, Acelya moved to the UK and quickly established herself as one of the industry’s rising talents. Selected for Grierson DocLab 2022, Sheffield DocFest Amplify 2023, and named a Broadcast Hot Shot in 2023. Credits include BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Amazon & Netflix.

Join Acelya to explore clear progression pathways and training opportunities for editors, with Netflix’s scheme as a case study.

Peter Beard (Story Films Limited) is a multi-BAFTA and Emmy-winning filmmaker and Co-Founder of Story Films. Credits include Otto Baxter: Not a F***ing Horror Story, To Catch A Copper, The Thief His Wife and the Canoe, and Hostage. A longtime advocate for diverse voices, we are very happy to count him as Stitch n Bitch ally.

Join Peter to learn how he made the model work as an EP and how other productions and commissioners can adapt it to their needs

Tom Dixon-Spain (Editor & Co-Founder of InCrowd Agency) is one of TV’s most in-demand editors. Credits include The Diamond Heist, Bad Sport, Helmand Tour of Duty, and Ukraine: The People’s Fight. After mentoring upcoming editors throughout his career, he’s now at the forefront of Netflix’s editor progression scheme.

Join Tom to learn how to future-proof the industry by training the next generation and what makes a great mentor in the edit suite.

Zeb Achonu BFE (Moderator) is an award-winning editor and consultant. White Nanny Black Child won a BAFTA & RTS Award in 2024. Other credits include Brexit (BBC), Ladies First (Netflix), and Saving Mum (Channel 4). Winner of the WFTV & Molinaire Post Production Award 2024.
A Stitch n Bitch member since its early days, Zeb mentors, speaks on panels about her path and career, and regularly engages with young people starting out in the industry. by @zebeditor

🍿🎟️Tickets available!See link in bio…coming to a city near you 🎬Presenting- The Fish Don’t Care When It Rains trailer! We know a lot of you are anticipating the film’s premiere and we can’t wait either. Today we are publicly releasing the official trailer. Please help us share this far and wide. You can also sign up for updates and news at the link in our bio. There is something I have to say and that is, “Just because we are disabled doesn’t mean we aren’t the same human as everyone else.” If these things were happening to mainstream schoolchildren…or puppies, people would be marching in the streets. But we have long been ignored because we are still thought of in a different class. Not quite worthy of protection. That is why I wanted to make this film. So the people can’t ignore us anymore.
I am so thankful for my international, award winning team!

EDITORS DON’T GROW ON TREES
— Expanding the editorial pool

Producers, commissioners, post execs… this one’s for you 👀

There’s a growing feeling across the industry that we need more practical ways for emerging editors to gain high-end documentary editing experience.
But stepping up within the edit suite is often near-impossible, particularly for women and gender-diverse people. And we at Stitch n Bitch know that nothing can train you for our job like the job itself.

At Sheffield DocFest, we’re bringing together the team behind a Netflix documentary production that put this idea into practice; training a junior editor to edit within a high-end production, with all the usual pressures around budgets, schedules and delivery still in place.

We are hosting an honest discussion about the pros, the cons and what other productions could gain from following suit.

With Peter Beard (Story Films), Tom Dixon-Spain (Editor) and Acelya Kancelik (Emerging Editor)
Moderated by Zeb Achonu (Editor and Consultant)

Presented by StitchNBitch Editors Collective ✂️
