Mangaroa Farms recently featured in Issue 11 of @ontheland_mag in an eight-page spread about the farm and the question it keeps asking: what does the land want to be?

The article covers the 1,200 acre project holding a market garden and orchard, a farm shop, a sheep and beef operation, local events, and 700 acres of pine in transition back to native forest.

On The Land looks at the people on the ground at @mangaroafarms, from the farmers who are restoring soil through adaptive grazing, to the team simultaneously opening an on-site butchery to serve the local community - to the market gardeners to the shop keepers, and the storytellers & events team - who can all trace their relationship with the project back to the soil.

For Mangaroa Farms, the measure of success is simple: if the Mangaroa river is healthy, the team knows they are doing a good job.

Issue 12 features:
- Tara Benedict's @wildwood_farm regenerative pick-your-own flower farm in Taupō on the cover,
- @kiwihomesteaders - a Bay of Plenty couple teaching traditional craft alongside te ao Māori
- Growing and cooking perennial food forest vegetables with @permadynamics
- Forage bush kai with @sam_the_trap_man (an extract from his new book)
- Processing roosters with @gillian.swinton
- Growing brambles with @thefoodfarmnz
- Crafting a hunting bow with @threycameronarchery
- Making liquid feed with @edible.backyard

From December @ontheland_mag becomes a quarterly seasonal journal.

Good vibes at the tree planting this weekend with 40+ legendary volunteers, alongside awesome support from @groundtruth_nz and @greaterwellington. We're planting two waterways that border one block of pasture, as an experiment in virtual fencing capabilities thanks to our @halterhq collars, to see how we can graze without needing fences to protect the waterways.

We're not sure how it's gonna go, but will be sure to share our learnings 🌱

Underground Festival 2026 was a huge success 🙌🏽🌱 Two days, nearly 450 people, and one incredible community coming together to celebrate soil, kai and farming.

The @undergroundfestivalnz team is looking forward to doing it all again next year, and have announced the next dates for early autumn on 9-11 March 2027 in the mighty Waikato.

Alternating between north & south island each year means the festival can explore two very different climates and farming landscapes. More creative scope, and more opportunity to celebrate the diverse nature of growing kai in Aotearoa.

On behalf of the Mangaroa whānau, we’re extremely grateful for everyone who came out to join us at the Harvest Festival over the weekend.

We had over 1200 people come through the gate - with sold out garden & permaculture tours, and hundreds of sausages, pulled lamb buns, hāngi and coffees enjoyed by many.

Big thanks to all who contributed to what was a magical experience of Kai & community 🙌🏽

Here’s a few snaps from @danescottcreative

More to come soon...

Underground was phenomenal.

From the moment @claire_hannington_williams and I began prepping 60kg of bircher muesli, to wild harvesting fennel in the morning light, it felt like stepping into a living ecosystem rather than simply arriving at a festival.

I hosted a conversation with @sophiemerkens and @molly.chester of @thebiggestlittlefarm - two extraordinary women whose work bridges land, story, and food in very different yet deeply resonant ways. Between sessions I caught up with old and new friends, those hay bale conversations often as rich as the talks themselves.

The food was something else entirely. Regeneratively raised meats, local fruits and vegetables, all cooked over fire. Slow, intentional, elemental. You could taste the land in every bite thanks to the legends from @basefoodbyfire @hohua_hanita @maxgordy

I slept in a bell tent under a wide sky of stars, woke to beautiful coffee, and experienced what might genuinely be the fanciest festival toilets I’ve ever seen. And because the gathering wasn’t enormous, nothing felt frantic. No long queues. No rush. Everything felt easy.

At one point @pounamu_skelton asked me what my favourite part was.
I paused.
And realised it wasn’t one talk or one meal.
It was the feeling that everyone there belonged to the same ecosystem - yet each person carried their own unique bridge into it.

For a moment, we get to walk across someone else’s bridge. To see through their lens. To enter their ecosystem of knowledge, experience, culture, craft, grief, joy, food, land.
And in doing so, our own ecosystem widens. I’ve always loved seeing how connected everything is.

In nature, biodiversity creates resilience.
In community, diversity of people and thought does the same.

Underground felt like a living demonstration of that truth.

Thank you @franbaileypr for weaving together such a remarkable constellation of humans from all over the world. It was a privilege to be part of it.

See you all next year! #Underground2026

Ma Earth is part of a growing movement responding to the call of our time. To care for Mother Earth.

Around the world, many of today’s ecological crises stem from broken economic incentives - systems that reward extraction over regeneration. In response, Ma Earth began with deep listening.

The interview series The Regeneration Will Be Funded has hosted over 150 conversations with global voices in land stewardship, climate investing, indigenous leadership, philanthropy, and policy - collectively asking: what will it take to reimagine finance in service of life?

From those seeds of dialogue, action emerged. @maearthstudio is now hosting Funding Rounds, awarding matching grants to regenerative land-based projects through community crowdfunding. These resources support communities restoring water, reviving soil, and nurturing biodiversity - embodying the belief that “regeneration begins with relationship.”

The @maearthstudio Learning Lab offers practical tools, workshops, and shared wisdom - cultivating an open-source library for ecological stewards. From blockchain, to bio-char, to biosecurity, it holds space for regenerative practitioners to connect and share.

You can explore all of the above on the new Ma Earth website at https://maearth.com
