Meet Zainab Hakeem, a Ph.D. candidate in biochemistry at the University of Georgia—and a researcher working to unlock new ways to fight cancer.

Zainab studies natural killer cells, exploring how we can help these immune cells to better recognize and kill cancer cells. Her research is NIH-funded, highlighting the lifesaving role government plays in supporting basic science that can lead to new treatments and lengthen our loved ones’ lives.

“Scientists need funding to do the work,” Zainab said. Federal investment makes it possible to pursue the early-stage, high-risk research that pharmaceutical companies may not have the resources or incentive to fund - especially for rare diseases, Zainab shared in a recent interview.

From discoveries in the lab to treatments that save lives, federal investments in science helps turn questions into knowledge, and that knowledge into effective treatments that can transform the lives of millions of people living with a cancer diagnosis in the United States. 🧬🔬

The results are in!
I posed the question - ‘what do we call a gathering of science communicators?’ - exactly 1 month ago today (on July 8) to all of you on Instagram and you answered!

The winner is ‘A CATALYST’
A group of science communicators is called a CATALYST!

Not gonna lie, @zee.phd made me feel pretty smart for understanding this process whereby natural killer cells -- those bad-a** named cells that are normally part of your innate immune system and look for anything not "self" -- can actually participate in the ADAPTIVE immune system! This process uses antibodies, meaning Natural Killer cells that use this antibody-dependent process can LEARN to fight new things, like previously hidden cancer cells! Learn more here and in my latest podcast episode with Zee, now on YouTube! (link in bio)

🧬 What happens when an immunology researcher discovers glycobiology?

Meet Zainab Hakeem, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Georgia whose path into glycobiology began with a passion for immunology. While she initially envisioned a career in medicine, hands-on research during high school sparked her fascination with scientific discovery and ultimately led her to pursue immunology research instead.

During her Ph.D. in Dr. Adam Barb's laboratory, Zainab discovered an often-overlooked aspect of biology: glycans. Although she had never formally studied glycobiology, she quickly realized that glycans play a central role in regulating immune function and countless other biological processes. Today, her research investigates how glycosylation influences immune cell receptors, helping to uncover how sugars shape our immune responses.

Zainab hopes her work will help bring greater awareness to a field that remains underrepresented in biology education and research. As she puts it, glycobiology is too important to overlook—and understanding glycans can unlock new insights into human health and disease.

🔬 Read Zainab's full story to learn how curiosity, persistence, and a passion for immunology led her to become a glycobiologist.
