“I wanna be able to tell a story that still reflects the truth, yet with a beautiful poetic angle.”

Paris-based photographer Kenny Germé wanted to be a war reporter, but skateboarding, a love for cameras, and a few close peers, steered him into fashion photography. Still, his storytelling instinct never left. Pushing beyond the merely “beautiful” fashion imagery, he builds bold, powerful compositions which portray his subjects with honesty and depth.

New Book is a publication by @newstudiostudio. For our second issue of New Book we explored the theme of “integrity”. In times where trends and ideas spread in seconds, and also may only last seconds, the pressure to gain recognition is greater than ever; integrity has become one of the most valuable (but also most tested) qualities a creative can possess. In New Book 2 we interviewed inspiring 10 creatives about their work ethics and beliefs.

“Goalkeeper: A Meditation on the Last Line of Defense” 🧤🎞️ A @whereisfootball short film directed by Zito Madu (@zeets7).

The legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel once said that he never made a mistake in his life. The statement might seem delusional but it was a testament to the mentality that a great goalkeeper has to have. They need short memories and to be able to move on quickly from mistakes, because a goalkeeper’s mistake often means a goal for the opposing team. And though many people won’t remember the heroics of the goalkeeper, everyone remembers when they fail.

Director Zito Madu (@Zeets7) and @whereisfootball traveled with Ben Hooper and the @bumpypitch team to the TST tournament (@tst7v7) in Cary, North Carolina, and over the span of several days, we filmed only the goalkeepers. We captured the range of stillness and chaos that defines the position. The brilliant saves and the moments of despair. The moments when teammates acknowledge the goalkeeper as their savior, and when the goalkeeper is left to suffer alone.

The goalkeeper position is the last line of defense, and that position carries a unique burden on the field. Everything starts and ends with them. Only a few can shoulder that burden to greatness. Only a few courageous players have the necessary ego to put themselves in that spotlight. On that line where they can be either hero or villain at any moment. It’s no wonder then that there’s a cliche that you have to be crazy to be one of them.

Endorsements are lagging indicators. They follow infrastructure, and they never create it.

Candidates lose. Infrastructure persists. Build at your workplace (@organizeworkers), your building, and your block. Make every district too expensive to buy.

Roberto Baggio will always be remembered for one moment. With that miss in 1994, @zeets7 writes, Baggio made it to the edge of glory, but then, at the last possible moment, came back to us. He became human.

Anyone who has played the game competitively knows that most of us fail. After all, only a handful actually get to experience the joy of the sport’s biggest successes at any level. The rest of us will come in second, third, fourth, and the rest of the places, all the way down to last.

When Roberto Baggio failed to save Italy in 1994, he saved the rest of us.
