Made my debut for @ssense and wrote about Stan Squirewell’s new show and the house at the center of it, and how a house is the perfect structure to embody an artistic practice built on layering the past, present, and future. Thanks to @chrisgayomali.

“Goalkeeper: A Meditation on the Last Line of Defense” 🧤🎞️ A @whereisfootball short film directed by Zito Madu (@zeets7).

The legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel once said that he never made a mistake in his life. The statement might seem delusional but it was a testament to the mentality that a great goalkeeper has to have. They need short memories and to be able to move on quickly from mistakes, because a goalkeeper’s mistake often means a goal for the opposing team. And though many people won’t remember the heroics of the goalkeeper, everyone remembers when they fail.

Director Zito Madu (@Zeets7) and @whereisfootball traveled with Ben Hooper and the @bumpypitch team to the TST tournament (@tst7v7) in Cary, North Carolina, and over the span of several days, we filmed only the goalkeepers. We captured the range of stillness and chaos that defines the position. The brilliant saves and the moments of despair. The moments when teammates acknowledge the goalkeeper as their savior, and when the goalkeeper is left to suffer alone.

The goalkeeper position is the last line of defense, and that position carries a unique burden on the field. Everything starts and ends with them. Only a few can shoulder that burden to greatness. Only a few courageous players have the necessary ego to put themselves in that spotlight. On that line where they can be either hero or villain at any moment. It’s no wonder then that there’s a cliche that you have to be crazy to be one of them.

Once again made people come to my house for six hours to read things that they wrote or things that are meaningful to them. This time the theme seemed to be about how to be in the world, one’s relationship to art and the possibility of what you can be, and also masculinity and the different ways that it can be reshaped away from domination and the anti-feminine. We had people read travel stories, an essay from Bergman, journal entries, on-field reporting, letters to their young daughter, meditations on Bruce Willis and Die Hard, and so much more.

This series started on my birthday years ago where some friends asked me to read, and I said it’s not as fun talking at people as it is to read with them. I feel like many people have a deep relationship with literature but they barely get the chance to read and talk about writing that is meaningful to them, and I would rather create a space for that relationship than anything else. Every time I hold one of these, there are always a few people who cancel at the last minute because they’re intimidated or scared of reading in front of people, but the people who attend, new and old, know that it’s a very attentive and supportive crowd. It isn’t a prize competition and everyone has to read, so you’re sharing the suffering and fear with everyone else. The scariest part is that I will ask you questions about what you’ve read to hopefully learn more about what you think and why that poem, excerpt, or series of text messages resonates so much with you.

I’m glad so many people came out again. I was happy to see some new faces, and also the recurring characters. Thanks to everyone who came out, it’s always so fun that the hours fly past quickly. by @zeets7

Roberto Baggio will always be remembered for one moment. With that miss in 1994, @zeets7 writes, Baggio made it to the edge of glory, but then, at the last possible moment, came back to us. He became human.

Anyone who has played the game competitively knows that most of us fail. After all, only a handful actually get to experience the joy of the sport’s biggest successes at any level. The rest of us will come in second, third, fourth, and the rest of the places, all the way down to last.

When Roberto Baggio failed to save Italy in 1994, he saved the rest of us.

The essay that I wrote for @goldengoal.world on Roberto Baggio is now available to read online.

When I was asked to write about the World Cup, I thought to write about one of the most iconic moments that, from a sporting perspective, symbolized ultimate failure, but in my eyes, that failure made Roberto Baggio immortal in a way that success couldn’t. I write in the essay that I didn’t set out to redeem that moment, to pretend that failure is good, but to say that failure is the experience that connects most of us in sport and in life. The winners are few and far between, and most of us know failure more than we know the joys of the ultimate success. Most of the greats have won and will be remembered as the ultimate symbols of achievement and success. They are so far from us. Baggio went to the top and crashed down in front of tens of thousands and millions watching from home. The most iconic image of his career is one of coming up short. In my eyes, he is a saint of football unlike the rest. He represents the common experience of the game and those who play it. He symbolizes the experience of doing your absolute best, coming up to the moment of truth, and realizing that the story wasn’t written for you. He was an immortal who fell to the level of the lowest of us, and because of that, I adore him more than the rest.

I beat Shawn Michaels in Wrestlemania 12 when I hit him with a brilliantly executed Perfect-Plex but creative felt so bad for him that they erased the tapes and replaced it with a match against my lookalike, Bret Hart.

Went to Gracie Mansion on behalf of @whereisfootball for pickup soccer.

In his speech, the mayor, Zohran Mamdani, talked about the nations who made their World Cup debut in this year’s tournament and how they reminded us about what the beautiful game is all about. Playing well on the field is important, yes, but what’s been more substantial is how these teams have presented a chance for people who are often not as visible in this city, country, and the world, to showcase their culture and pride in who they are. And because joy is best when shared, they have allowed the rest of us into their worlds.

The game at its best is a path towards connection and to discovery of the world. Football’s true power is in the depth of the people who play and love it, not the institutions that try to squeeze every penny from it. by @zeets7
