When Wonder came to W10. In September 1980 Stevie Wonder played six nights at Wembley Arena London. The tickets sold out in minutes. During his residency he asked to meet some people from the communities his work was increasingly focusing towards. And here , on the Mozart Estate Harrow Road he played an impromptu gig for members of the Avenues Youth Centre - who probably stood little or no chance of getting to see him at Wembley. These great photos now on display @avesyouth capture this inspirational moment - and 45 years later the wonder continues as youths become youth workers, kids become mentors and wannabe musicians become stars. In 1999 I made a BBC documentary film, ‘Frontline Radio’ about the kids who were making stuff happen at Aves. And last night what a total buzz it was to reconnect with some of my wonderful cast members from the community … Big shout out to the incredible @jusblazefire then choreographer now songwriter, vocalist and music producer. @mrllionel, former youth club member now sports wiz and mentor, @specialistmoss then pirate radio garage mc now artist, producer and local hero and last but not least the Legend that needs no introduction and who made it all happen - Carol Bent. Brilliant to meet some new staff members too (Hi Diane, Hi Neilah) and see the unveiling of the jaw-dropping photographic wall installation collage created by @christophertippingstudio (thanks Chris for the pics of myself and @jusblazefire) Frontline Radio will be showing soon in the manor @portobello_film_festival with Aves collabs in the mix. Keep your dials locked for updates. Forward ! ✊🏼✊🏾✊🏿📽️🎞️🎥 #avenuesyouthclub #pirateradio #soul #randb #Reggae #westlondon #W10 #indiefilmmaking
