Day two we got off to a somewhat early start after some cliffside coffee. Muley Point is an epic place to wake up, even though I’d apparently decided to sleep a little closer to the edge than necessary.

Up until lunch, the trails were either freshly groomed or solid rock, and we were making pretty good time. After seeing a lot of smoke ahead of us, we found out there was a forest fire and decided to skip a section rather than ride into it.

Unfortunately, that little detour put us at the beginning of Lockhart Basin at about 1 p.m.

Lockhart Basin. At 1 p.m. In August.

Not exactly ideal timing.

So we met up at Mexican Hat with plans to camp there and start our journey up the #UTBDR the next morning. But after two days of triple-digit heat, the sun started setting, the temperature started dropping, and the band was back together! We decided to start the trip that night.

After a few performance enhancers, we headed into the Valley of the Gods as the sun went down. As scenic as the Moki Dugway is, I’d never thought about riding it at night. Seeing the lights of your best buds three or four switchbacks behind you, shining against the cliff—with a wall of rock on one side and a black void on the other—was nothing short of surreal.

Once we got to the top of the Cedar Mesa escarpment, we rode out to Muley Point and camped on a cliff high above the San Juan River, overlooking Monument Valley.

Epic start, to say the least.

Utah bdr, lockhart basin ain’t no joke on the big bikes. Camping, swimmin, and cookin over a fire don’t get much better than that!

Utah BDR day one. Ripped up through Valley of the Gods just as the sun was setting. Slept under the stars, woke up with the sun and hit the road.

7.4-mile sunset paddle out and back with friends on the Cooper River Water Trail. We put in at the new launch at the Camden County Parks Headquarters and paddled west along the narrower and shallower section of the Cooper River until it widened at the main park section. After passing the Route 130 bridge and pausing to watch the sunset, we paddled back east in the dark.

Sadly, the launch at the Parks HQ was a steep muddy bank that was very difficult to access, so I would suggest launching from the Grove St. bridge or the Dog Park until the county comes up with a more optimal boat launch at that location.
