In celebration of our upcoming One-Year Anniversary, we are excited to announce “CELLULOSE COMPOSITION,” our very first exhibition featuring student work at @chicagoartdept. We hope to see you at the opening on September 18th!

Curated by Talia Kim Wright and Aidan Anne Frierson, “CELLULOSE COMPOSITION” features 21 papermaking artists who have showcase exemplary passion, excitement, and curiosity. We have chosen artists who fully lean into the touch that papermaking insists on; those who work large—stretching fiber across deckle boxes to create entire landscapes of bonding—and those who work small—using pulp to craft intimate, detailed forms that hold the memory of the hand.

“CELLULOSE COMPOSITION” is a celebration marking One Year of Chicago Pulp—but more than that, it is an example of touch, and how just one fingerprint can impact an entire body of work, creating bonds to last a lifetime.

Exhibiting Artists: AYAH YUSUF ABDULKADIR, PAYTON HARRIS-WOODARD, ANGELA DAVIS FEGAN, NINA GARIBALDI, OLIVIA J. BROWN, TIA RIE BALDWIN, ZIYA TARAPORE, MICHAEL BAJA ANDERSON, JENNY VALLE-OLIINYK, ALEXIS WOO, TIMUR SAHIN, VIDA SAČIĆ, IZABELLE BRANDLI, LIZ BORN, MARCIA MAHONEY, KATE DONLEY, SOPHIE URSCHEL, TORI PAWLYK, CAITLIN WAGNER, ALANNA HUCK-SCARRY, DAVE KING

The last week of June I had the honor and privilege of spending 8 consecutive Studio Days with Ziya Tarapore @ziyasartwork from 10am-4pm each day during her Private Studio Session with us @chicagopulp

Private Studio Sessions are one of my favorite ways to learn and connect with other Artists in the Papermaking community… and literally one of the many favorite parts of my job! because I get to spend such consistent, intentional time working directly with an Artist to support them in the process of actualizing their ideas, developing their projects, and exploring through research.

Sadra is a sacred Cotton garment worn close to the skin by Parsis. Ziya mailed and trusted me to receive, shred, and pulp 12.5lbs of Sadra Cotton Fiber worn by her father and her family. Ziya made (4) 3ft x 6ft sheets, multiple 3ft-6ft sculptural pieces, Paper castings, and multiple 22in × 30in sheets of Paper during her time in the studio. Ziya’s work will be exhibited in 47-A Gallery in Mumbai, India this November 2026.

Ziya’s studio session was ambitious and deeply impactful. Her personal commitments to the process is truly driven by her passionate connections between her mind, spirit, matter, and making. Her heart is so open, holding a deep desire to share, and a willingness to learn through: herself, others and her collaborations with chance.

It was a joy spending time in the studio together listening to Dave Brubeck, House Music, eating good food and co-working with Ayah Yusuf Abdulkadir @ayah_.jpeg and Izabelle Brandli @izzpocketbook

I learned beyond iterations imaginable, and this time has impacted not only my practice for the better but has expanded my perspective and further developed my potential as person.

A new body of work underway that will push new levels of my Impressionist Sculptured Paper defining style. Starting with "The Tall Forest", number 1/6, of a series I'm calling "Forest Landscapes".

Those who recently did my 5 hour Masterclass @burrinja on foundational techniques for sculpture with paper, learned the necessity for creating an armature, as you would of wire when sculpting with clay.

This is the essential way I judge by eye the form of what's to come. The armature is then overlayed by papers sculpted to fit the shape using techniques that stretch and mould those papers.

If ever there was a serious contender for cutest insect, surely Ladybird Beetles are at the front of the queue!

This is the official photo of the Transverse Ladybird Beetle, (Coccinella transversalis, Family Coccinellidae), the newest addition to my "Insects in Sculptured Paper" series.

I've shown stages of how this work was sculptured and now, here's the finished piece ready for exhibition as part of "Pieces of Paper" at @burrinja from 9 May till 21 June, (Winter solstice incidentally). I have the great honour of giving the opening speech at this combined show.

Please refer to previous posts for all the details.

Our next member spotlight is Ziya Tarapore! 🌊

Ziya has an upcoming Solo Show at 47-A, Mumbai, Nov.14-Dec.13.
Ziyas artist statement:

Paper sculpture has been my chosen artform for last 10 years. I worked in found paper, discarded packaging material and scraps. But 3 years ago, heartbroken by my father’s rapid decline, I dissolved his worn shirt into paper pulp and sculpted it as a remembrance.
What emerged was The Sadra Project — a body of work rooted in ancient Zoroastrian teachings on Nature and human kindness, made from the worn discarded sadras (sacred muslin undershirts) of people who have shaped my life across six decades. The energy held in sacred daily clothing is something you can feel in every piece.
Crashing ocean waves. A Tree of Life stitched from sacred seams. Flowers captured in pigmented pulp. The Sadra Project transforms worn sadras into paper sculptural works that speak to our ancient teachings on preserving this planet. Each garment carries the energy of a life lived in devotion — including my father’s. Collecting the imbued energy from people integral to my life across sixty years has become something I never anticipated: a profound act of remembrance.

Thank you Ziya for sharing your work with us!

My art shares foundational techniques with clay sculpture, but my medium is not an amorphous pliable mass. Therefore, being a sheet-formed medium, I had to develop a unique type of foundational amature. Not wire or wood as the clay sculptor works over, but sectioned profiles.

This profiled amature is then"skinned" with a sheet of carefully sculptured stock to fit onto the shape. In this case I am using a beautiful locally handmade @creativepapertasmania 100% cotton rag 180gsm paper.

This is the distinguishing part of my art....true paper is a sheet-formed medium, not a clay-like mass or paper machè. It is also not layered but a truly dimensional form as with clay, wood or other sculpture.

The piece forming will be a "Transverse Ladybird" beetle, (Coccinella transversalis), the latest in my insect series. 🐞 It's very gratifying to see how much people are loving these insect works.

Meanwhile come see "Insects and Botanicals" at Gemco all this week from 10am to 5pm, 19 Kilvington Dve, Emerald as part of the wonderful @pavedfestival Festival.

Also visit the jazz portraits @emersleighestate 17 Stewart Rd, Emerald. 10am to 5pm this and next weekend, the 19th inc.

Imperial Jezebel, Delias harpalyce, Male, Pieridae. This is the official final image.
I may take about 50 shots at different exposures and lighting angles. This one was particularly challenging. I've done my own studio photography for almost 30 years. Currently my tools are a Sony alpha 7r coupled with one of two lens from Zeiss or Sigma, depending on the artwork. The studio lights are Metz.
The final step is framing, which I make from Tasmanian Oak finished in a Chalk Lime Wash to complement the art, topped with acrylic glazing for protection.
The original will be exhibited @pavedfestival from 11th to 18th April at the Gem Cultural and Arts Centre, Emerald. A fantastic annual festival for everyone to enjoy.

Just a few weeks away, "Insects, Botanicals & Other Works" @montsalvatartscentre .
My connection with Eltham and Montsalvat go back to before I was a teen, when my artist mother worked on her series of aquarelles featuring distinctive Melbourne architecture, (the subject of an upcoming book I'm finishing).
I lived in Eltham through most of my 20s, and knew artists like Matcham Skipper - a real character - so exhibiting here is deeply meaningful.
Exciting new works include more of my favourite animal group, the insects. My insect art has been very popular which makes it even more rewarding to show new works on that subject.

Dragonfly body nearly ready to colour. This is the raw sculptured paper body. The 350gsm hot-pressed (giving stiffness) paper armature is finished off in cold-pressed (giving pliablilty) cotton art paper with some kozo in a few details sculptured to the appropriate shapes.
This species is the common Blue-spotted Hawker (Adversaeschna brevistyla) that measures around 65mm long in real life, making my sculpture about 500% scale.
