So excited to be back at lightbox this weekend with @zomastudios , Mmanwu was the first project I ever worked on and I’m still so proud of what we did with that film! Work in Process Wednesday! Episode 12: Uzoma Ngwu ‘23 Filmmaker, Illustrator, Creative Entrepreneur Uzoma is a multidisciplinary artist and the founder of ZOMA Studios & ZOMA House based in Minnesota. The studio’s debut project is “Mmanwu,” an animated short film centered around Nigeria’s masquerade tradition. ZOMA specializes “in full-service hand drawn animation from script to screen.” Whether it was determining which songs should be in Igbo versus English, or the process of transforming customary fabrics and patterns into nuanced illustrations, every frame in the film required decision-making across artistic disciplines. What’s got you so scared, Ogechi? We’re celebrating Nigerian Independence Day this year by sharing a teaser for MMANWU, our indie animated short film about a Nigerian-American teenage girl returning to Nigeria after the death of a close relative. The film mixes magical realism and horror/thriller to explore themes of grief, spirituality and cross-cultural understanding. The full trailer will be released in MARCH 2024 alongside the launch of our crowdfunding campaign to support the creation of the full film. It’s been 3 years since we posted the Mmanwu teaser. When you work on a project for so long, you become so fixated on finishing it that you don’t always take the time to appreciate how far you’ve come. I want to take that time now. In 3 years, we produced a proof of concept trailer. Ran a successful kickstarter campaign. Made script rewrites and storyboard revisions. Designed characters and environments. Wrote and scored original music in English and Igbo. Recorded voice actors in the US and Nigeria. Tabled at LightBox Expo. Producing this film has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but having the support of this team has made it worthwhile. I will forever be grateful for all the artists and musicians who believed in this film enough to help bring it to life. The film isn’t done yet but I can’t wait to share it with all of you when it is. I can’t wait to show off the work of this incredible team. To every person who has contributed to Mmanwu, thank you.
