Was thinking about how I fall into two of the demographic groups least likely to vote, being an Asian-American voter age 18-29. Even though I did cast my ballot, I wonder what it is or isn’t that turns my peers off from participating. For me, even though I’ve only been a legal voter for a few years, I’ve always felt too “dumb” as a young person to understand existing voting issues and political nuances. As an Asian-American, I’ve also always felt removed from the general populace of Americans; that even though I was born and raised here, I am not American, and my concerns aren’t the same as “their” concerns. Maybe it’s also the mentality from growing up with parents who come from a more collectivist culture, where individualism doesn’t really affect the state. These all seem like pretty silly reasons now, and I’ve since made the conscious effort to educate and remind myself who I am as a citizen of this country. But I wonder if these reasons are still subconsciously permeated in the inaction of my peers, along with a multitude of other factors, that no matter how silly they seem, are still 100% valid to my peers. I know the system isn’t perfect, and there’s never going to be an election without a fiasco; but I want to remind us to use what we’ve got to make our voices heard in the democracy we all still exist in together. What do you think?
