Improving the quality of life for all North Carolinians.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A true honor to join forces with the Mary C. Jenkins Center and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to document the first Western North Carolina African-American History Symposium earlier this year. We popped up a studio in a back room at the cultural center to photograph elders and organizers in the community as they gathered to celebrate, document, and preserve the history of Black Appalachia.

Poet Nicola Karesh has worked as a liaison between the Rosenwald Community and the city of Brevard to place historical markers around the region.
She writes:
“Life is a prayer. Let me open to the wisdom of it.
There’s a feeling that everything I could possibly want is already right here for me.
It is simply a matter of opening to the beauty and the inherent wisdom of life.”

Edith Darity, an alumna of the Rosenwald School helped organize the Center, and her daughter, Karen Darity, organized the symposium. (Shown together in slide #7.) Speaking about the effort, Karen says, “One day, the elders will no longer be here, and you can’t go back and ask them those important questions. There’s a way to bridge that gap through history and communication. Young people need to understand where their true identity and character come from through the stories of their elders, the grandparents, the aunties, and the people that helped raise them and help build their core values.”

No, it’s not a Connections puzzle; these are the threads that form the identity of the Coharie Tribe of North Carolina in Clinton, NC. Thank you to @zsrfoundation Inclusive Public Art Initiative and the Coharie Intertribal Council. It is a great honor to have been trusted with this project.
