“Of course I had to open my mouth...”

When Patrick Greene was named NC Principal of the Year in 2022, he became an advisor to the State Board of Education, and he found that his on-the-ground perspective was valuable to state-level decision-makers.

Fast-forward four years, and Patrick and other former NC Principals of the Year have banded together to form a network of school leaders using their voice and expertise to champion and strengthen NC’s local public schools.

Brevard is known for its waterfalls, mountains and beautiful fall leaves, but did you know it’s also home to one of western NC’s most vibrant centers of Black history and culture?

Since 1942, the Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center has been a pillar of Brevard’s historic Rosenwald community. Today, it’s a place where history stays on the walls and gets passed down, one story at a time.

If you’re in town for the leaves, stop by the Center’s library, walk the historical markers of Brevard’s historic Black community, or ask for a personal tour!

When Liana Adrong was 13, her family was granted refugee status and resettled in Greensboro, joining thousands of other Montagnards (Indigenous people of Vietnam’s Central Highlands) who now call North Carolina home.

Liana began working with the Montagnard Association of North Carolina (MANC) in 2017, taking on whatever the organization needed. Nine years later, as Executive Director, she’s led MANC through the acquisition of land for a Community Wellness Center — a project first envisioned two decades ago and now within reach. Her leadership touches thousands of families, Montagnard and beyond.

Liana is a ZSR Sabbatical Program awardee for 2026. After years of steady service to her community, she will be taking well-deserved time to rest and reconnect with her family and heritage. by @zsrfoundation

Lisa Familo has spent more than 20 years advocating for young children and families. She’s also been a military spouse for 21 years, helping her family navigate nine deployments.

She’s been at the helm of the Iredell County Partnership for Children since 2018. Since she joined, she has stabilized its funding, expanded its services, and opened a satellite office to reach more families across the county.

Hi from ZSR’s hometown of Winston-Salem!

Our team spent two days taking a deep dive into Winston’s history and culture during our staff retreat. Huge thanks to the amazing leaders who joined us — Regina Hall from Boston Thurmond United, Mike Wakeford from MUSE Winston-Salem, Shayla Herndon-Edmunds from OMG Wellness Bar, and Cheryl Harry from Triad Cultural Arts (also author of the great book “Winston-Salem’s African American Legacy” — check it out if you haven’t already!).

Grateful for community leaders working to preserve and acknowledge Winston-Salem’s full history while building toward a more just and inclusive future for all residents. by @zsrfoundation
