POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hear from Jyoti Shrestha @ztstha an artist from Nepal who exhibited at the CPB International Photography Open Call, Edition 02.

Her project, Ji Ta Newa Bhyaa Mawa, traces the quiet loss and tentative return of Nepal Bhasa, the ancestral language of the Newar people of Kathmandu. Learning it again alongside her parents became an act of rediscovery, of memory, intimacy and belonging.

Jyoti looks back on her experience of showing her work in Chennai and encourages photographers from Nepal and across the world to apply for Edition 03.

Your photographs could be next. Don’t miss your chance to show us your work.

September 2025, through the lens.

The events of September left behind a powerful visual record — moments of protest, grief, anger and extraordinary change.

Photography is an important part of The Long September. Alongside the narratives and analysis, these images offer another way of understanding the events as they unfolded, capturing moments that words alone cannot fully convey.

Here is a selection of photographs featured in the book, through the lenses of Amit Machamasi, Bruno Bertini, Sajeewan Rai, Jyoti Shrestha, Rohan Shrestha and Prabin Ranabhat.

Our thanks to these photographers, and to the many others whose work helped document September and its aftermath.

📖 The Long September is available through Thuprai and selected bookstores and outlets across Kathmandu.

In Open Mic With Sapana, the guest of honor was Jyoti Shrestha, a visual artist and photographer from Nepal whose work has been quietly reshaping how the world sees our stories.

Jyoti’s practice moves between documentary and experimental photography, exploring gender, language, identity, and collective memory — the silences inherited traditions carry, and the voices that refuse to stay erased. Her lens traces the forces shaping bodies, desire, and belonging, reclaiming what history tried to forget.

And now, the world is coming to her. On November 22nd, her project Chhyake will be exhibited in Venice, Italy — part of Personal Structures, the official collateral exhibition of the 61st Venice Biennale, organized by the European Cultural Centre. Her work will stand alongside 150 artists from around the globe, in historic venues like Palazzo Bembo and Palazzo Mora, and be included in the official exhibition catalogue.

This is no small thing. Photographers from Nepal remain largely absent from this global stage — and Jyoti is changing that, one frame at a time.

Her journey has been built on her own terms: the US Embassy Artist Grant, the British Council Grant, Prix Virginia Jury’s Choice, the PhotoKTM Fellowship, the Angkor Photo Workshop in Cambodia, Fresh Eyes Talent 2026 by GUP Magazine, and exhibitions across Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

In 2024, she left her full-time role as Arts Programme Coordinator at the British Council to pursue photography full-time — a leap of faith that is now landing on one of the most prestigious stages in contemporary art.

But the road to Venice is not free. Travel, accommodation, and the costs of being present for a milestone like this add up fast — and with limited institutional support for artists from Nepal, Jyoti has started a GoFundMe to help make this journey possible.

If you believe in art that tells the truth, in Nepali voices on the world stage, in a photographer who chose her path and walked it — please consider donating, sharing, or simply sending her your good wishes.

Jyoti — Venice is waiting. And so are we, watching with pride

For #PersonalStructures2026, four voices come together around questions of identity, perception, visibility, and our relationship with the world.

▫️ Nadia Kisseleva, “Rare Metals”
Soil, sand, colour, and texture become the language through which Nadia Kisseleva reflects on the geopolitics of the Earth’s mineral wealth. “Rare Metals” connects geology with power, extraction, environmental strain, and the hidden human costs behind the resources that sustain our contemporary world. @kisselevanadia

▫️ Bold Beauty Project, “Disability becomes Beauty becomes Art becomes Change”
Through powerful large-scale portraits and personal narratives, Bold Beauty Project celebrates women living with disabilities, challenging conventional ideas of beauty and creating space for visibility, awareness, and social change. @boldbeautyproject

▫️ Anne Harris, “The Mind’s I”
Transforming the private act of looking at oneself into a collective experience, the artist draws while looking in a mirror, creating an evolving installation where individual perceptions meet and become a shared visual conversation. “The Mind’s I” brings 105 drawings from its archive to Palazzo Mora, alongside new works created during the exhibition. @anneharris.painting

▫️ Blurring the Lines — Jyoti Shrestha, “Chhyake”
Through self-portraiture, collage, text, and layered textures, Jyoti Shrestha explores queerness, body image, inherited trauma, and visibility in Nepal. “Chhyake” turns experiences of shame and erasure into an act of reclamation, resilience, and the right to exist authentically. @blurring_the_lines_edu @ztstha

We are unable to find words for what has been happening in the last days in Nepal, and how to express the amount of pain and grief. Some people we know personally have been affected by the recent floods in Nepal, and we know many of us feel the same helplessness, devastation and sorrow. While immediate relief is coordinated by people and entities equipped for this work, we’ve been thinking about what support from our side might look like in the weeks and months ahead, when the attention and resources begin to shift elsewhere.

Together with friends, collectives and organisations, we’re hoping to allocate and support families with some of the longer-term needs that come with rebuilding their lives.

As a platform for artists and creatives, we want to raise funds through prints & artworks, projects, gatherings and initiatives, contributed by people in our network, with the proceeds going directly towards supporting these families.

This is the beginning of an idea that needs to take a definite shape yet, as the situation keeps changing and we move as required. Nothing can be set at this point and needs to be discussed collectively with everyone involved, closely following the situation and involving affected communities. For now, we’re reaching out to artists and organisers who might like to be part of this and to start organising. After building a group, we will discuss how the prints & artworks are collected, produced and sold, how events & projects can be coordinated and who the beneficiaries & partners are.

At this very moment, we know that we want to contribute however possible and with whatever lies within our capacity to support in the long term. If you’re interested in contributing a print, artwork or edition, and/or are ready to plan and initiate, please send us a private message. We’ll share more information and updates as the initiative takes shape. Preparation is key, and we want to be ready.

We know that individually we may not be able to do much, but together, we can provide meaningful and sustained support for families affected by the floods.

Please continue to support the people of Nepal in this time!

Nepali photographer Jyoti Shrestha was shortlisted for the 2026 European Cultural Centre (ECC) Awards in Venice, Italy, for her photographic project Chhyake.

Her project was selected as one of only four shortlisted works in the Emerging Practices category. Chhyake is currently on display at Palazzo Mora as part of Personal Structures, a collateral exhibition of the 61st Venice Biennale organized by the ECC.

The project explores the body as an archive of memory, resilience, and identity, confronting inherited ideas of shame and body image. Shrestha is currently raising independent funds via GoFundMe to travel to Venice to represent Nepal in person before the award winners are announced on November 22, 2026.
