Still pinching myself. 🥹✨

I’m incredibly honoured to share that my project, Chhyake, has been shortlisted for the ECC Awards 2026 at the European Cultural Centre’s Personal Structures in Venice. 🎉

To be one of the four shortlisted projects for Emerging Practice is a privilege beyond words. 🌍🤍

The bittersweet part is that while my work is being celebrated in Venice, I’m still raising funds to travel there and experience the exhibition in person.

If you’d like to support this journey, the link is in bio or you can do so here:

Grateful to be alongside so many inspiring artists and artistic practices from around the world. Thank you to the European Cultural Centre for this recognition. Thank you @pathshala.institute @steve.bisson @sarkerprotick @urbanautica @blurring_the_lines_edu @ecc_italy and @pariscollegeofart

Visual artist Jyoti Shrestha will represent Nepal at the Venice Biennale 2026 — the world’s oldest and most prestigious art festival, often referred to as the “Olympics of the art world.”

She is the only Nepali artist exhibiting this year, and only the second ever from Nepal to be featured at the Biennale, following Tshering.

Her project Chhyake, a photography-based work exploring shame, language, and queer bodies in South Asia, will be showcased as a Spotlight Exhibition under Personal Structures, one of the Biennale’s prominent parallel programs.

A historic milestone for Nepali contemporary art on the global stage.

I feel so overwhelmed by all the love I’ve received over the past two days. ❤️

We’ve raised another 5%, bringing me closer to Venice, but honestly, it’s the messages and gestures from everyone that have touched me the most. I didn’t expect so much love, and I don’t even know how to put it into words.

Someone I met while volunteering reached out and sent me money. When I told her I was hoping to raise the remaining amount by the end of October, she said she would send more when her next salary came in. My little cousins reached out, telling me they had some savings and asking how they could contribute. I told them to keep their savings, but my heart melted. 😭

These little gestures, the messages, the encouragement, and every contribution have reminded me how beautiful life can be when we show up for one another.

I feel so supported. I feel so loved. And I feel even more strongly that this work matters, not just to me, but to our community and to Nepal. Thank you for believing in me and helping make this dream feel possible.

To everyone who has contributed, including those who chose to remain anonymous, thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you’ve sent a contribution anonymously, please feel free to DM me or leave your name in the remarks so I can thank you personally.

We’re getting closer to Venice, and I’m carrying all this love with me. Thank you for being part of this journey. by @ztstha

Hi 🤍

This is the first time I’m asking for support like this, and honestly, it’s not easy for me. I’ve tried my best not to, which is why I’ve been reaching out to institutions, organisations and individuals for support since I found out in January that my work would be exhibited in Venice.

I honestly had almost given up on being able to go. But now that I’ve been shortlisted for the 2026 ECC Awards in Emerging Practices, with the ceremony taking place on November 22, I really, really want to be there.

I’ve been incredibly lucky to receive support from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, NIMB Bank, the Italy Consulate in Nepal, Pratima Pande, Keepa Mathema, Subha Shrestha, and many other individuals who have supported me in different ways.

A very special thank you to Sophia Pande, Sohrab Hura, Shashwat Das and my family for their encouragement and for reminding me to keep going when I was close to giving up. Your support has meant more to me than you know. 🤍

I’m now about 80% there, with the remaining 20% still to go.

So I’m asking my community for help. If my work has ever meant something to you, made an impact, or you’ve simply enjoyed following my journey, any contribution, no matter how small, would mean so much to me.

And if you’re not in a position to contribute, sharing this fundraiser would help me just as much.

Being interviewed and featured by Kantipur TV HD, one of Nepal’s mainstream media platforms, feels incredibly special. Growing up watching people on that screen, I never imagined this would be a dream I’d get to live. ❤️

I’m currently raising funds to travel to Venice for the award ceremony for Chhyake. If you’d like to support my journey, every contribution means a lot:

For #PersonalStructures2026, four voices come together around questions of identity, perception, visibility, and our relationship with the world.

▫️ Nadia Kisseleva, “Rare Metals”
Soil, sand, colour, and texture become the language through which Nadia Kisseleva reflects on the geopolitics of the Earth’s mineral wealth. “Rare Metals” connects geology with power, extraction, environmental strain, and the hidden human costs behind the resources that sustain our contemporary world. @kisselevanadia

▫️ Bold Beauty Project, “Disability becomes Beauty becomes Art becomes Change”
Through powerful large-scale portraits and personal narratives, Bold Beauty Project celebrates women living with disabilities, challenging conventional ideas of beauty and creating space for visibility, awareness, and social change. @boldbeautyproject

▫️ Anne Harris, “The Mind’s I”
Transforming the private act of looking at oneself into a collective experience, the artist draws while looking in a mirror, creating an evolving installation where individual perceptions meet and become a shared visual conversation. “The Mind’s I” brings 105 drawings from its archive to Palazzo Mora, alongside new works created during the exhibition. @anneharris.painting

▫️ Blurring the Lines — Jyoti Shrestha, “Chhyake”
Through self-portraiture, collage, text, and layered textures, Jyoti Shrestha explores queerness, body image, inherited trauma, and visibility in Nepal. “Chhyake” turns experiences of shame and erasure into an act of reclamation, resilience, and the right to exist authentically. @blurring_the_lines_edu @ztstha

Nepali photographer Jyoti Shrestha was shortlisted for the 2026 European Cultural Centre (ECC) Awards in Venice, Italy, for her photographic project Chhyake.

Her project was selected as one of only four shortlisted works in the Emerging Practices category. Chhyake is currently on display at Palazzo Mora as part of Personal Structures, a collateral exhibition of the 61st Venice Biennale organized by the ECC.

The project explores the body as an archive of memory, resilience, and identity, confronting inherited ideas of shame and body image. Shrestha is currently raising independent funds via GoFundMe to travel to Venice to represent Nepal in person before the award winners are announced on November 22, 2026.
